Meanwhile, at the detention center.
Alex had been interrogated for three straight days and nights. The harsh glare of the overhead lights beat down on him, tormenting both his mind and body.
Yet, he withstood it all.
Whenever he thought of Elspeth and his daughter who consumed his every thought yet whom he could never get close to.
Even if the sky fell down, he would hold it up.
At that moment, the door to the interrogation room opened, and Aaron sauntered in with an unapologetic air of indifference.
In front of suspects and criminals, he was no longer the wealthy and noble Aaron. He exuded an aura of danger and intimidation, commanding respect and even fear from those on the streets.
“Still hanging in there, I see?”
Yawning, Aaron pulled out a steel chair and casually took a seat. “Hey, get Alex some coffee to perk him up. After all, the night has just begun.”
“Yes. Captain Ashbourne.”
Alex gritted his teeth and chuckled bitterly. “Captain Ashbourne, don’t you get tired grilling me like this every day?”
“Not at all, I’m young. I can handle it.” Aaron grinned mischievously.
“I’ve already told you everything I know during the past two days. You can question me all night, a thousand times even, my answer will stay the same.”
Aaron narrowed his eyes slightly, a cold smirk playing on his lips. “I’m tired of the old questions. Let’s try something new.”
He placed a photograph of an item in front of Alex.
Alex looked down, his body jolting forward at the sight of the lily necklace in the photo. Despite his best attempts to control his expression, the twitch of his muscles around his eyes betrayed his fear!
“Do you recognize this necklace?” Aaron asked, his gaze never leaving Alex, as his fingertips lightly tapped on the desk.
“No.” Alex answered without hesitation, a cold sweat breaking out on his forehead.
“It’s your own possession, and you don’t recognize it?”
Aaron’s smile widened, his tone mocking. “You wrapped it in exquisite silk and stored it in an expensive jewelry box. It’s clear you value it highly. And now you’re saying you don’t. recognize this precious item of yours? Who are you trying to fool here?”
“You searched my house?” Alex’s pupils dilated, his fists clenched, the handcuffs making a harsh sound as they scraped together.
“You’re a criminal, and I’m a cop. Isn’t it normal for me to search your house? Don’t you even have that basic understanding?”
Aaron leaned back, smiling faintly. “I’ve already investigated. This necklace once belonged to Elspeth. The fact that you’ve kept Elspeth’s personal item so carefully stored at your place suggests that you have quite an unusual relationship with her.”
“I stole it. Is that a problem?” Alex’s face was ashen, his teeth gritted.
“I went to your workplace and found colleagues and directors who worked with you more than twenty years ago. They all recognized you. They shared a lot about you and Elspeth, which is all testament. They said that the actress you always admired and pursued was never Myra, but Elspeth.”
Sweat streamed down Alex’s face as he spat out, “They don’t know anything!”
“Not only that, but they also mentioned how you created every opportunity to get close to Elspeth, always ready to serve her. And back then, everyone knew that Elspeth and Myra were arch–rivals. Your house is filled with photos of Elspeth, not a single photo of Myra, not a single TV show with Myra in it on your computer. How could you possibly be a fan of Myra?”
Aaron’s voice hardened, his eyes darkening. “So your previous claims of growing to hate Myra out of love simply doesn’t add up.”
Alex’s face was taut as he forced a smile. “Even if you found out, so what? I am indeed a fan of Elspeth, crazy about her. For her, I can do anything, including killing Myra!”
Aaron was trembling slightly with rage, wishing he could just bash Alex’s rotten head in!
“But if you want to know about my relationship with Elspeth, there’s none. She has nothing to do with me. It’s all one–sided. I’m willing to do anything for her, including dying or killing. And she doesn’t need to know any of this.”
Alex finished speaking, closed his eyes, and adopted a carefree attitude as if he had nothing left to lose.
He was bold because he knew his charges wouldn’t be more than intentional injury or attempted murder at worst. After all, Thaddeus and Myra were both unharmed, so the Ashbourne family could do nothing to him.
The only regret was that he couldn’t complete the task Elspeth had given him.
Aaron was well aware of Alex’s plan. His chest was filled with burning anger, his eyes turning red!
After a while, he ordered his subordinate to leave and got up to turn off the recording device.
“Alex, now it’s just us two. Let’s cut to the chase.”
Aaron strolled around the interrogation room, hands in his pockets, and then sat on the desk, looking at Alex with a cold smirk. “You’re willing to be Elspeth’s hitman, to kill for her, and that’s your choice. But if it gets out in the media that you and Elspeth have a special relationship, what will they think? And what will the Abernathy family and Mr. Frederic think of her? Everyone will think that Elspeth sent you to attack Myra. And Frederic will think that there’s something going on between you and Elspeth. When you’re locked up and out of the picture, what will happen to your old flame? Her reputation is bad enough as it is. If this gets out, she’ll be utterly disgraced.”
To kill a man, he must first break his spirit!
That was what his younger sister Evadne once told him.
Alex shivered all over, his bloodshot eyes fixed on Aaron, the handcuffs clinking. “You’re a cop! Leaking the case to the media is against the rules! I’ll report you!”
“To deal with a ruthless and wicked criminal like you, extraordinary measures are needed. If not, would you obediently surrender?”
Aaron lifted his chin, unafraid. “Let me tell you, Alex, this time you’ve not only messed with me, but also the entire Ashbourne family. You lay a finger on Myra, and I swear on my life, I’ll drag you and Elspeth straight to hell with me!”
Back at the Abernathy family.
“That’s the guy! He stole it!”
Elspeth, flustered and incoherent, blurted out, “I left my necklace backstage while filming once and when I returned, it was gone. It must have been him who stole it!”
“Really? He stole it and didn’t sell it. but cherished it instead till this day?” Evadne sneered at her contradictory defense.
“Why would I know what he wanted to do?” Elspeth, knowing she couldn’t outsmart Evadne, decided to play dumb.
How could Evadne do anything to her without concrete proof?
“Truth be told, I had someone investigate the TV station and found people who had worked with Alex. They all claimed that you two were very close. He didn’t take a dime from you, Elspeth, but was more than willing to be your lackey, ensuring your safety and attending to your every whim. Do you think a man who adores you like he’s bewitched would steal from you? Even if he did, it would be out of love for you, Elspeth.”
Evadne’s eyes narrowed, displaying a smirk that sent chills down her spine, “So, he’d be willing to do anything for you, including deliberate murder.”
“Evadne! Shut your mouth!” Elspeth yelled, drenched in cold sweat.
The crowd began to cast suspicious and complex glances at her, even Frederic, whose icy gaze was fixed on her.
“Elspeth, did you secretly instruct Alex to harm Myra, leading to the previous accident?” Evadne suddenly changed the direction of her interrogation.
“I didn’t. I didn’t! Everything was Alex’s idea. It has nothing to do with me!”
Elspeth clutched Frederic’s suit, her vision blurring with tears, “Frederic, I have no grudge against Myra. I’m the lady of the Abernathy family, who is Myra? She’s just Emeric’s mistress! Why would I pick a fight with her?”
“Elspeth! Stop talking.” Frederic sternly warned.
“Elspeth, you can insult me, but you cannot disrespect my family.”
Evadne’s gaze turned menacing as she pointed a delicate finger at Elspeth’s tear–streaked face, “Insult Myra again, and I’ll slap you.”
Everyone fell silent.
Barry shook his head, “Emeric’s daughter is too wild. Threatening to slap people at the drop of a hat, she has no manners. She’s too unruly and spoiled!” “Well, everyone spoils her.“.
Jareth shrugged, “Chairman Emeric spoils her, her siblings and stepmother spoil her, even Thad spoils her. No wonder she’s so spoiled. Thad has never spoiled any woman in his life, except for Ms. Evadne. He’s made exceptions for her, indulging her without limit. No other woman can compare.”
Edith noticed the hidden meaning behind his words, her face burning with jealousy and anger.
Thaddeus watched Evadne, her fiery and fierce demeanor making his heart race uncontrollably.
Elspeth was paralyzed with fear, not daring to move an inch.
She was familiar with Evadne’s ways. If Evadne threatened to slap someone, it wasn’t a joke.
“Evadne, all these are your speculations! You just want to tarnish my reputation! You have no evidence!” Elspeth was convinced of this, otherwise, how could she still be unscathed?
“Is that so? Why are you so defensive? Guilty conscience, perhaps?”
Elspeth’s face turned crimson with embarrassment, unable to retort.
Evadne chuckled and pocketed the platinum necklace, “The nature of the relationship between the two will soon be clear once I speak to Alex. There’s no need to be impatient.”
Recalling Alex who was already under police control, Elspeth was on edge!
“I won’t disturb you any longer. Excuse me.”
Under the watchful eyes of the crowd, Evadne walked towards the exit with her head held high.
Thaddeus clenched his fists, his intense gaze following her every move.
He wanted to follow her several times, but managed to suppress his restless heart each time.
Just as Evadne was about to leave, Mrs. Fairhaven called out to her.
“Ms. Evadne, next time you handle family matters, you should pick a more appropriate time and place. At least inform Mr. Frederic and Thaddeus in advance so that everyone isn’t left feeling awkward.”
“Awkward? I don’t see it.”
Evadne shrugged nonchalantly, a teasing smile playing on her lips, “Maybe next time you should toughen up, so you don’t feel so awkward.”
