Chapter Forty One

Eve turned the page in Lunar Things, re-reading a passage that now caught her eye. This excerpt was on the usage of monkshood. Two hundred years ago, when the packs cast someone out, they didn’t simply remove the mindlink and shun them; as they do in modern times.

Monkshood was forced into the system of the ostracized wolf, until they could no longer even speak to the beast within them. In simple terms, they destroyed the animal part of them. Eve recalled the haze placed in her brain after Elkin injected her with his concoction. The memory made her chest tight.

A cage of fog! Shrinking! Trying to kill us! The she-beast growled.

Eve shook her head, trying to dispense the thoughts but her heart was pounding. All she could hear was the thunder in her veins. She closed the book with stiff, trembling fingers. Standing, she walked to the front door and pulled it open.

Eve had hoped that the smell of fresh air could help her calm herself but it seemed, instead, to serve only to stir her already agitated inner animal.

No more! No more! The she beast howled.

She turned on her heal and walked to the kitchen. She retrieved the bottle Elkin had left her. There was one, purple tablet inside. Eve carried it with her back to the porch.

What if-

Eve’s thoughts were interrupted by the crashing of a wave. Power. It flooded her mind. Fury. It blazed through her veins. Something was wrong. Her chest swelled with the growing strength inside her, it felt like she could burst.

Flint. Eve realized where the aggression was coming from.

He is nowhere! No! No more! We decide for us! We! No more! The animal snarled in response.

The Luna collapsed to her knees on the porch and opened the bottle. She took the tablet into her palm and threw it into the yard. Her muscles clenched without her consent. Eve’s scream became a howl as the wolf inside her tore its way to freedom.

In a matter of moments, she found herself running across the estate. It felt like she couldn’t breath, and also like she didn’t need to. Eve felt like she were watching herself speed into the trees rather than doing it herself. Even her wolf sat beside her, in awe of it.

Like a demon, the animal pounced on fallen trees. Her strength snapped them, splintering the wood. Her powerful jaws ripped limbs away and her steel-like claws tilled the forest floor effortlessly. A familiar howl was carried on the wind.

Eve’s wolf snapped back into perspective when her mate’s scent reached her senses. She could feel Flint approaching. Instead of this knowledge calming her, it seemed to frustrate her. The animal smashed another branch beneath her paws, confirming that her incredible strength remained.

Little thing? The Alpha wolf’s voice crossed her mind.

Eve growled and turned toward the white wolf. He was twice her size but at that moment, she felt as light as a feather and as strong as a freight train.

Calm yourself. He stepped closer to her.

The she-beast snarled at him. In a mere second, she had run directly into his chest. Flint’s paws slid back a nearly a yard from the impact. Eve bounced off of him and stepped out of his reach. She growled at him again, displaying her power.

Flint could feel how strong she was. No one had ever moved him from such a sturdy stance. He could also sense her emotions. She was angry at him, at the pack, seemingly at the world. Flint looked at her for a long moment, reaching into her chest beneath her obvious aggression. Eve was confused, afraid, and hurt.

The large, white wolf stepped toward her and she darted around him. Flint spun to face her but she was further away now. The power radiating off of her was impressive. Any wolf who saw her in such a state would be forced to bow to her. Instead, her mate tried to approach her again.

Everything is alright, little thing. The wolf tried to sound soothing.

Nothing is alright! The Luna growled in response.

His eyes widened as she landed in front of him in a single leap. Her gaze was fixed to his, and it wa aflame with fury. Flint stared at her, unsure as to what he should do. He was dumbstruck in the face of Eve’s overwhelming anger.

Where are you?! Not here! We’re going to DIE and you’re not even here! The she-wolf howled.

You will NOT DIE! The Alpha snapped out of his state of shock.

Eve growled in annoyance.

We’re going to fix this. The large, white wolf took another step toward her.

You’re gone! We’re alone in this! In everything! You nearly let Elkin kill us! She snarled.

What? He was again surprised by her.

The purple plant will KILL me! That’s what it is used for! It won’t hurt us. There is no us! It will kill ME! It caged me in our mind and tried to crush me! To suffocate me! You let him do that to us and then you left us behind!

The she-beast was howling and growling. The Alpha felt his mate’s anguish in his chest, like a sinking anchor around his heart.

If the medicine endangered you, get rid of it. Flint’s wolf responded quickly.

We did! We are a team. We say no more! The Luna barked.

We are on that team with you, little thing. We would never harm you. He answered, moving closer to her.

You left! Where did you go?! The she-beast took a step back from him.

Flint’s wolf winched visibly as her heartache vibrated through him. He looked back to his mate with determination before running toward her. The dark wolf froze as she watched him approaching her. He stopped just before their noses collided.

We will never leave you, little thing. Not ever. The rough, depth of his voice in her mind couldn’t keep her from feeling the warmth he meant for her. Sᴇaʀch Thᴇ Find_Nøvel.ɴet website on Gøøglᴇ to access chapters of novels early and in the highest quality.

We’re tired of being alone... The she-wolf answered in an oddly small voice.

You are not alone. He stepped up to her and tucked her head under his chin. I’m sorry, little thing...

You won’t leave us again? She snuggled closer against his side.

No. Never. Flint’s wolf sounded certain.

Promise me. She pressed against him just to feel the soothing thrum of his electricity.

We promise. He stated in a determined tone. We will protect you, little thing. We will. We promise you this as well.
