Chapter Forty two

Eve and Flint spent the rest of the day and the following night in their room. The Luna needed to rest, she had been too wound up for too long. The power didn’t recede to the pit of her stomach until she had been asleep for some time.

Flint gazed at her as she slept in his arms. Her face was nestled against his chest and she looked peaceful. Yet, he could feel the turmoil within her. He recalled their first conversation as they entered the house in their human forms.

“I thought I could help you by staying away.” He stated.

“How could that help me?” Eve’s voice was quiet and she was radiating exhaustion.

“My power-”

“Do you remember the oaths we took in front of the entire pack? The night we became the Alpha and Luna of StarLight?” She interrupted him in a soft voice, it reminded him of the calm before a great storm.

“Of course.” He nodded.

“We are one, you and I. Just like my wolf is one with me. And yours is with you. And the pack right there with us. We are all one in power and soul, Flint. How would tearing away part of me help me? How could splitting me apart, possibly help me?” Eve stared into his eyes with an amazing intensity.

He didn’t respond. He didn’t know how. After a few very long moments, she turned and walked away. He caught up with her as she climbed the staircase. Her steps were uneven, she swayed and gripped the railing. Flint wrapped his arm around her before picking her up to cradle her against his chest.

“I’m still mad at you.” She whispered.

“I know.” He breathed into the top of her head as he continued up the stairs. “I’m mad at me too.”

Flint had taken his mate to the shower before carrying her to bed. He had been cradling her bare body against his ever since. He hoped that his presence would sooth her, along with the electricity of his touch.

Truthfully, he needed to feel it too. Flint had been trying to ignore the ache of her absence since deciding to stay away from her. Now, looking down at her, he felt guilty.

More so than ever before. It was his blood that was doing this to her. His blood that was threatening their child. And on top of all that fault, he had left her to bear it alone. Flint fell asleep as the sun began to rise with his nose buried in Eve’s hair.

Just two hours later, the sound of a shrill ringing echoed through the room. Flint groggily reached for the bedside table but the sound shut off, seemingly by itself.

“Luna, Eve.” She answered the phone. Sᴇaʀ*ᴄh the Findɴovel.ɴet website on Gøøglᴇ to access chapters of novels early and in the highest quality.

Flint rose up on his elbows to see his mate talking on her own phone. She rarely had pack business so early in the morning. He listened in to the conversation curiously.

“Checking in. Criminal is in custody with three of her friends.” Anna’s voice replied.

Flint sat up straight and looked at Eve with furrowed brows. She turned to him, and seeing his expression made her remember that she hadn’t filled him in on her plan.

“I want them unconscious during transport. The Alpha and I will review the footage together and meet you at HQ.” She stated.

“Yes, Luna.” The specialist agreed before hanging up the conversation.

Eve turned to look at Flint again, only to see him resting his back against the headboard with his arms crossed across his chest. His expression was tired, but expectant.

“So... I did a thing.” She stated.

He tilted his head, examining her curiously as he waited for an explanation. Eve wrapped the sheet around herself as she scooted over to face him properly.

“I set another trap. This one for Sarah Becker.” She spoke in a confident tone.

“You did...” Flint raised his eyebrows at her.

“Let me get my laptop. I can’t believe I missed the live feed.” Eve got up and grabbed her robe out of the closet.

In a few moments, she was back beside her mate on the mattress with the computer on the thighs.

“So, Anna and some of our people spread this rumor through NorthWood territory that Daniel’s son would be camping. I hoped it would catch the attention of the rogues working for Sarah.” She opened the video and began to sort through the footage for movement.

“It definitely got attention.” He nodded.

“Well, I sent some trackers into Dayton to get some personal things of the Alpha family’s. Like dirty laundry, nothing big.” Eve paused when she saw a few familiar warriors setting up their tents.

“Then you sent them to the woods to go camping.” Flint nodded, understanding her train of thought.

“I didn’t want to put the trackers in any direct conflict. I had them hand over the items to some young warriors, but you get my point.” She explained.

“And you got her.” He turned his eyes from the monitor to his mate.

“We got her. StarLight, two. Bastian, zero.” Eve smiled in the hopes of seeing approval from Flint.

“What warriors did you send?” Flint asked as he adjusted the screen on her lap to see it better.

“Jethro, Bethany, David, and Dylan. Johnny wanted to go but his leg is still healing.” She replied.

“You picked a crew of trouble makers.” He acknowledged.

“They want validation. I offered them a chance.” Eve shrugged.

“Uh-huh. Play the video.” Flint pressed the space bar.

The Luna fast forwarded until the warriors stood at attention, oddly serious. She pressed play on the footage. The sound seemed to fluctuate in clarity but it was good enough to understand what was being said.

“Who’s there?” Dylan barked into the dark forest.

The group stood around the campfire. They were all studying their surroundings closely.

“Where is Morris?” A male voice asked from the distance.

“Who is asking?” Jethro called back.

“I am.” A female stepped out of the shadows.

Her hair was black and her eyes were sharp. She looked short in height but the expression she wore was one of calm, calculated, hatred.

“And who exactly are you?” David asked aggressively.

“You smell like Daniel.” She narrowed her eyes at him.

“Name. Now.” Bethany demanded in a serious tone.

“Sarah Becker. I showed you mine, now show me yours.” The rogue smiled.

She snapped her fingers. Four of her followers jumped down from the tree tops, surrounding the campers.

“Which one of you, is the son of Daniel Morris?” Sarah continued grinning as if she’d already won.
