Chapter 0042

Samantha had never seen Francis so angry.

Nathan, who had been enjoying the show from the sofa, toddled toward them and tugged at Samantha’s hand.

He kindly explained, “I think they started fighting because that auntie thought Uncle Francis lied to her.”

“Who are you, brat? How dare you call me an auntie!” Alexis felt embarrassed to be exposed by a three–year–old.

She didn’t hate children. When she thought he might be related to Francis, she immediately pulled a fierce expression.

Nathan remained unfazed. He proudly pointed at Samantha. “Her darling son, of

course.”

“What? When did you have a son?” Alexis was shocked.

She crouched down and pinched Nathan’s cheeks. She carefully observed the similarities between mother and son.

Disgusted, Nathan swatted her hand away. He couldn’t understand why a graceful lady like his mom would have such an unrefined friend.

He turned around and walked toward Francis. He was unconsciously supporting Francis‘ repulsion toward Alexis.

“But-” Alexis shot up, irritated that Nathan wasn’t giving her a chance.

Alexis found Nathan to be just as annoying as Francis.

“Samantha Duncan, don’t tell me that while you were away, you had a son with such an awful man.”

Samantha was used to Alexis‘ temper. She knew that Alexis didn’t really hate Nathan, so Samantha wasn’t too bothered by her words.

Samantha excitedly dragged Alexis over to a seat and grabbed a drink from her fridge for her friend. “I found out I was pregnant during a surgery four years ago.

”

Samantha let her words sink in. As expected, Alexis immediately fell silent.

She didn’t open her drink. Instead, she silently observed Nathan before following Samantha into the kitchen.

“I can’t imagine how difficult things must have been for you all these years.” Alexis leaned against the doorframe. She watched Samantha work in the kitchen, feeling sad for her friend.

Getting divorced and disfigured, going bankrupt, and discovering she was pregnant… Alexis wasn’t sure she would’ve survived if the roles were reversed.

She had always thought Samantha to be a sheltered, weak woman.

Samantha was sampling the soup she was making when she noticed Alexis‘ worried expression. She squeezed Alexis‘ cheek.

“I’m fine, see? The desire for revenge kept me alive, but Nathan was my biggest gift and redemption.”

Motherly love shone in her eyes whenever Samantha talked about Nathan.

“Is there anything I can do to help with your revenge plan?” Alexis stood next to Samantha. She wanted to give Samantha a hand, but being the culinary amateur she was, Alexis had no idea what she could do.

“I’ll definitely ask if I need anything. I invited you over since we didn’t get a chance to catch up properly last time. You’ve been taking care of my parents while I was gone. I was hoping to know if they ever mentioned anything about Duncan Group.”

Samantha was sure the tragedy had something to do with the high–interest loan. She suspected that it must have been because of Kendrick’s ploy.

She must also have been the bargaining chip. Otherwise, her father wouldn’t have turned out this way as soon as Kendrick divorced her.

Although Francis was connected to this issue as well, he was merely the lender. He had no relation to Duncan Group. Moreover, after receiving Francis‘ constant care, Samantha was no longer angry at him.

Upon hearing Samantha mention Duncan Group, Alexis glanced at her uncomfortably.

Samantha immediately caught on and asked excitedly, “What do you know?”

Alexis awkwardly pulled her hand back when she realized Samantha had misunderstood something.

She quickly explained, “I’m not sure about the specifics. I just know that besides the shares you gave Kendrick, he also secretly bought a lot of shares. So, even though your father was still the president, he no longer held any power. He was forced to borrow money from a loan shark.”

Alexis continued, “However, no one can confirm if this has anything to do with Kendrick. All we know is that when the incident broke out, Kendrick chose not to help your dad. Your dad didn’t want you to worry, which was why those things transpired.”

“Has my mother ever mentioned anything about this?” Samantha was dissatisfied with Alexis‘ answer.

Still, she admitted that she was partially the reason things arrived at this point. She had been foolish for giving everything to Kendrick. It was no surprise Alexis was uncomfortable with the topic.

“Two days after leaving the hospital, we discovered you were missing. Your

mother was completely occupied, praying for your father to wake up and for you to return safely. She didn’t have the time to take care of the company or mention anything else.”

Alexis hung her head sadly while feeling guilty.
