Chapter 20
Sitting on the couch by the window, I stared out at the scenery of trees beyond. The sun was shining brightly this morning. Too bad, I couldn’t get out of this bedroom to enjoy the fine day.
Suddenly, I heard a click of the door being unlocked. I didn’t have to turn around to know that the person who just came was Sigmund.
“What are you doing there?” Sigmund asked.
I snapped my head to the door and saw Sigmund standing there with a tray in his hands.
“I should be the one who ask you that question. What are you doing here in the morning? You should be sleeping now, right?” I asked him back.
“Yeah, I should have slept. But I decided to check on you first before I go to bed,” he replied.
“Check on me? So you want to make sure that I don’t try to escape again? You see, I’m still stuck here now and can’t go anywhere. Happy?” I said with upset tone.
Ignoring my sarcasm, Sigmund made his way to the bed and put the tray he brought on the bedside table.
“Come here! I brought your breakfast,” he said.
“What?! You brought me breakfast? Didn’t you say that you would starve me until I want to consume blood?” I mocked him.
“I am not that cruel, Princess. Seeing how stubborn you are, I know you would rather starve yourself than consume blood. That’s why I deliberately brought you food that doesn’t have blood in it. So eat your breakfast now!” he persuaded me.
“No, thank you,” I refused.
“Aren’t you hungry?” He looked concerned.
“No, I am not hungry; I’m starving. But no matter what happens, I will never eat the food you brought since I know you put blood in it,” I answered stubbornly.
“I told you this food didn’t have blood in it. Look! It’s just sandwich.” He picked up the plate from the tray and showed me the sandwich on it.
I eyed the sandwich suspiciously. “I don’t trust you.”
“Come here and check it yourself!” he ordered.
I understood why he wanted me to come there. I was sitting in the sun right now. Sigmund might be afraid that he would get burnt in the sun if he approached me.
“Why don’t you come here?” I challenged him.
He fell silence.
I gave an amused grin.
Sigmund put the plate on the tray back and then picked it up. Unexpectedly, he started approaching me.
My eyes widened in surprise. “You—you don’t get burnt in the sun?”
He smirked. “No.” Sigmund then put the tray on the coffee table in front of the couch where I was sitting.
I was confused. “But Lupita—”
“Lupita is a young vampire,” he cut me off, “The older the vampires, the more they get used to the sun.”
“So how old are you?” I asked curiously.
“Let’s just say I’m older than your oldest living family member,” he answered.
I chuckled. “Hahaha that’s funny. You know, my oldest living family is my grandfather, the vampire king, so you’re telling me you’re older than him?”
“That’s enough! Now eat your breakfast!” He pointed to the plate.
I shook my head. “No.”
“Eat your food and then I will tell you a good news,” he said.
“What’s the good news?” I asked.
“Eat first!” he ordered.
“Fine.” I picked up the sandwich and bit off a large chunk of it.
Once I finished eating, I demanded, “Now I’ve eaten my breakfast, tell me what the good news is!”
“Guess what, Princess? The King said start now on, you’re permitted to leave your room and you’re free to walk around his palace,” he told me.
My heart lifted at the news. “Are you serious?”
He nodded with a smile. “Yes.”
“Great!” I exclaimed happily.
'I think I should go out now. Since it’s in the morning so most vampires must be asleep right now. Then maybe I can find a way to escape,' I thought.
I jumped to my feet and hurriedly ran to the door.
“Where are you going?” Sigmund asked while following me.
“Exploring the castle,” I replied.
I tried the door and surprisingly it was unlocked. However, when I stepped out of the bedroom, two guards and Lupita hindered my way.
“What the hell is this? You said I was free to walk around the palace,” I protested.
“Yes, but King has ordered you must have at least two bodyguards and a maid with you when you are outside your room,” Sigmund explained.
“No, I don’t want to be followed around by bodyguards or maids. I won’t try to run away if it’s what you’re worried about. I promise. However, how can I run away from this place? There are guards at every corner of this palace, watching me from time to time. There is no escape here. So please let me go around this place alone. Okay?”
“I know you can’t escape from here, Princess, but you still need guards for your protection.”
“I don’t need someone else to protect me for I can take care of myself well. However, I am inside this palace. I am the princess. No one will dare to harm me here.”
“We’ll never know, Princess. So we can’t take the risk.”
“Can you stop being annoying, Sigmund? I just want to look around this palace for a while and I don’t need bodyguards.”
“Go with two bodyguards or stay in your room for the rest of the day,” he threatened me.
“Just two bodyguards huh? Why don’t 10?” I retorted.
“That’s a good idea! I think two bodyguards aren’t enough to protect you,” he said.
“Robert,” Sigmund talked to one of the guards, “call 8 more bodyguards here! We can’t risk our princess’ safety, can we?”
“Alright, My Lord,” the guard said while bowing his head, and lastly he left.
“What?!” My jaw dropped.
Quick as a flash, Robert came back with 8 more guards.
“All of your bodyguards are here, you’re free to explore the castle now,” Sigmund said with a grin.
“I hate you,” I spat. Turning around, I entered my bedroom again.
“Wait! Princess, why are you coming into your room? You said you wanted to go around the castle, didn’t you?” Sigmund mocked me.
“Forget it!” I slammed the door shut in front of his face.
I could hear Sigmund and the guards laughing at the other side of the door.
