Approaching the training yard, our conversations ended in a blunt silence, as we heard blades fiercely clashing together. Lycynians, Nathan and Anthony sparred viciously, and even though I hated him, Nathan was an excellent swordsman; his dual swords and movements were swift, but Anthony, he was also swift, giving him a run for his money, or skill. The two men were like Musketeers sparring in the training yard of the garrison, while the other soldiers were tending to their duties. Nathan got the upper hand moving quickly, knocking one of Anthony’s swords from his grip before kicking him hard in the abdomen, throwing the Italian to the ground.

Gasping softly, holding my breath, I worried for Anthony.

Nathan held his practice sword under the Italian’s chin, as he was taking the sparring session too far. However, for a single moment, the young man became distracted, lowering both of his swords as he glared over his left shoulder, sensing three presences behind him.

Seeing the opportunity to get back at the young man, holding his remaining sword, Anthony slowly stood then quickly let out a sharp whistle, attracting Nathan’s attention; the young man frowned as he turned, glaring upon the Italian who stood with one hand holding his lower stomach, and the other pointing the tip of the blade toward him. Seeing Anthony didn’t accept his defeat, only made him fume with more anger and rage.

“The first thing about combat, Nathan…never take your eye off your enemy, that’s when you lose.” Anthony lectured then lept forward, resuming their sparring then there was a single moment where the two warriors stood face-to-face, with their swords crossed in front of them, giving each other menacing stare downs. Anthony sneered, pushing Nathan backwards; he caused the young man to lose his balance, giving him the perfect opportunity to strike. He didn’t flip the swords from Nathan’s hands, but returned the aggression with such heated focus, kicking the young man in the abdomen, causing him to fall to the ground, placing his hands on his lower stomach. As he breathed heavily, ignoring the onlookers nearby, he took slow steps forward, leering down at Nathan, “You are very lucky that I didn’t kick you any lower, or you’d be lying there in excruciating pain.” he warned then cursed, “Stronzo madre.” he shook his head then reached out his hand, trying to help the young man from the ground, but Nathan brushed his hand away, helping himself to his feet, “Don’t, Nathan. We’re done.” he huffed.

“No we’re not, again!” Nathan growled. Getting into position, ready to lunge toward the Italian that stood in front of him, dropping his sword to the ground, Nathan hesitated taking a whiff of the surrounding air, catching the scent of Demon and a much more feminine floral fragrance. Looking at Anthony, noticing his eyes glanced past his shoulder, Nathan lowered his swords, then turned, observing Jonathan, Yzavela and Erik watching their practice session, “What the bloody hell do you want, magic fingers?” he mocked, “And what do we have here, hmm? The half-breed little Keeper herself, where’s your wolf?”

“How’s your jockstrap?!” I returned the mocking tone.

“Ah, good to see you’re looking.” he licked his lips.

“Believe me, I wasn’t.” I barked, frowning quickly.

“We didn’t come to see you.” Erik affirmed, “We had hopes of training but…” he turned, looking at her, “we’ll come back a bit later.”

“No!” I retaliated, “I’m staying to train, join me or go.”

“I’m staying.” Jonathan stepped forward, looking at Erik.

“Train?” Nathan mocked, tilting his head, “You? For what?!”

“That’s none of your business.” Jonathan leered at him.

“You know something?” Nathan stepped toward the Demon, “Just because you’ve got a thing going on with my sister, that does not mean I have to like you, cause I don’t, I hate you and all of your kind so you wanna train?” he backed away, “Enjoy, it’s all yours.” he bowed sarcastically, extending his right arm outward, then turned, walking away in shuffling steps, letting out a deep laugh at the thought of the young woman trying to become a warrior.

Anthony sighed, picking up the weapons that were left on the gravel. Quickly turning away, returning the weapons to the cabinet, he turned to the young Demons and half-breed.

“I apologize for that, Yzavela.” he said softly, looking at her, “He’s just such a…”

“Go ahead, say it. Don’t hold back on my account.” I urged.

“He’s a son of a b*tch.” he finished, “He does this all the time, expecting other to pick up after him, or to turn their heads the other way.”

“A son of a b*tch is putting it nicely.” I groaned, then showed concern for him and his recent blow to his stomach, “Are you all right?”

“Anthony, you okay man?” Jonathan also showed his concern, with no hostility toward the Italian that was well respected and liked by everyone on the Isle, Lycynian or not.

“I’ve had worse, but I’m fine. Thank you, both of you. Now, I think I’ll leave the three of you to practice, I’m heading to the kitchen for a drink. If you need anything, or training…” his dark eyes looked at her, “you know where I’ll be, but it looks like you’re in capable hands.” he nodded toward Jonathan and Erik, “Good luck, bellissimo.” he gave a charming smile, then turned, taking slow strides toward the manor, keeping one of his hands against his stomach.

Erik watched Anthony lay on his charm, then turned, rolling his eyes, then released a heavy grunt that sounded like a deep growl.

“What was that?” I turned to him, hearing it clearly, pushing aside the image of Anthony’s masculine STRUT.

“What was what?!” Erik shrugged.

“Did you growl?” my voice squeaked, then I turned around to Jonathan, “Did he growl?”

“No, it was just a groan.” Erik argued.

“It’s a Demon thing.” Jonathan added with a faint smirk.

“Right…” I nodded, following them both to the cabinet.

Erik retrieved two swords, keeping one for himself, handing the other to Yzavela, while Jonathan reached for two short long-bladed daggers. Once they were armed, both Demons began with verbal instructions of how to hold her stance from different angles, depending on how an enemy would advance. Taking it slow, grasping the beginner’s level, so to speak, for at least two hours, Erik and Jonathan grew confident in her learning ability but taking a pause, they looked at each other, deciding to move onto the next level.

I impressed them, on how fast I learned the movements.

“You’re a natural.” Erik praised.

“Thank you.” I appreciated the sincerity in his words.

“Are you sure you haven’t used a sword?” Jonathan added, tucking the daggers under his arms, needing to wipe sweat from his brow.

“Marxus asked me that same question.” I looked at him, “No.”

“What, no nasty remarks?” Erik joked.

“Don’t push it.” I teased.

“All right, come on.” Jonathan advised, “Enough flirting.”

“Flirting, really?” Erik stepped forward, receiving a shrug in reply as he looked at Jonathan. Shaking his head, he turned to her, “All right, this next part I’m going to show you some of the basic-to-advanced attacks, then I want to see if you were paying attention and replicate them, okay? Remember, there is no rush to learn them in one shot, so take it easy.” his gray eyes looked at her, scanning her momentarily then listened to her racing heartbeat with his enhanced hearing, “You okay?”

“Yes, why?” I wondered, “I’m just listening to you, that’s all.”

“Because your heart’s racing.” Jonathan informed her.

Placing my hand on my chest, feeling the rhythm quicken, I looked at the two Demons answering softly,

“I’m fine, you just take my breath away.” I let out a swooning sigh.

Shaking their heads, Erik stepped forward, showing her how to twirl, plunge and attack, parry and block, with the sword. He blended graceful, and masculine martial arts techniques, and Jonathan also stepped forward, showing her how to block his strikes, or that of another warrior yielding dual weapons, it was tricky for she had to watch where he would strike, or if he’d use just one dagger or both, but after failed attempts, she managed to anticipate his moves.

“The sword is better to evade.” I complained softly.

“You’ll learn.” Jonathan lowered his hands, “But you’ve done really, really good. You’ve actually learned more than any…” he looked at Erik then back at her, “any beginner should have in weeks, or months. Lucky lass.” he winked in a friendly way.

“I have good teachers.” I chuckled. Walking over, leaning on one of the tall cobblestone pillars I caught my breath.

Jonathan nodded, then stepped aside with Erik, speaking in a soft whisper.

Watching them speak among themselves, using their hands in expressive ways to explain something, I didn’t want to use my Telepathy to listen in, so I turned away, especially when I caught myself admiring Erik’s masculine mannerisms and his 5’8 form. Combing my bangs back, I turned focusing on the surrounding area, trying not to think about this dreamy gray eyes.

“Yza?” Erik asked, standing behind her, “Yza?”

“Hmm?” I turned around, seeing he stood so close, “What?”

“I was just asking you, if you can repeat everything that we…” he squinted, studying her, “everything we just showed you. I said it loud enough, didn’t you hear me?”

“Honestly, no. I’m sorry, I was distracted.”

“Distracted. Right. Well, I’m sure the leaves and trees around here are extremely fascinating.” he gently, but affirmatively grabbed her arm, turning her toward the training yard.

“Let go of me!” I pulled away, turning to him, “Don’t you ever grab me like that, EVER!”

“Hold your sword!” Erik ignored her protest.

“Erik, mate…come on, go easy.” Jonathan added bluntly.

“Easy?” he looked at his friend, “An enemy won’t take it easy!”

“Enemy?” Jonathan wondered, “You’ve never been to war.”

Erik clenched his jaw, feeling put in place. His arrogance was beginning to take over the situation. Glancing at his feet, he realized how it must have sounded, and looked, from both of their point-of-views.

“I’m sorry.” he whispered, looking at his friend.

“It’s not me, mate.” Jonathan gestured at Yzavela.

Looking in her direction, Erik frowned, seeing she stood with her arms folded, waiting for another apology.

“I’m sorry, truly I am.” he stabbed the sword into the gravel.

“Accepted.” I nodded, “And I too, am sorry for my distraction.”

“Well now that it’s out of the way…” Erik cleared his throat, “and you’re done checking me out, can we get back to this?”

“Excuse me?” I argued, “Checking you out?!”

“I know you were. I’m used to it, so I don’t really care.”

I scoffed, looking at him, then over at Jonathan in disbelief.

“Is he serious?! Are you serious?!” I snapped, “How did we get from taking about training, to checking you out?! I mean sure, you’re gorgeous and all but your whole Demon charm thing, or whatever the hell you call it, isn’t working!” I gestured at him up and down, “If I didn’t fall for Anthony’s charm, what makes you think yours will work?!”

Placing his hands on his hips, Erik was baffled. Glancing over in Jonathan’s direction, his friend held his hands up, cause he didn’t want to be caught in the middle of the conversation he wasn’t part of in the first place. Shaking his head, Erik replied as he took slow steps toward her,

“Believe me, love…if I laid out all my Demon charm…” his gray eyes stared into her big brown eyes behind her glasses, “your pretty little head would spin so fast, you wouldn’t know what hit you.” he studied her closely, noticing her freckles.

“Is that right?!” I stood close, “Typical guy.” I grew agitated, “Unbelievable.” I backed away, “You know…I think I’m done for the day, I’m sure my mom’s needs me for something by now, especially after dealing with the others in her magical practices, so excuse me.” I walked around him, and returning my sword to the cabinet, I hollered over my shoulder toward Jonathan, “Thank you, Jonathan. I’ll see you later.” I nodded then walked ahead, pushing past Erik toward the manor.

Biting his lip, he felt frustrated.

“Erik, let it go, leave her be.” Jonathan urged softly.

“Hey, pissant?!” Erik shouted, turning around. Staring at her petite form, that paused in her tracks, he watched as she slowly turned, leering at him, “If you weren’t busy checking me out, you would have been more attentive to what we were trying to teach you.” he took a few steps forward, “Just cause we had a few misunderstandings, doesn’t mean you should…” he did a little kick-step, “just walk away.” he held out both of his arms, “I don’t know you that well, not as well like both Sarah and Jonathan, or Marxus, but is this it?! Do you give up that easily, like a coward?!” he taunted her, “What kind of Keeper are you going to be then, huh?! One that gives up and turns her back, or one that surrenders when things get tough, or better yet, a Keeper that’s strong and fights for what’s hers, doing her best to protect herself and others with her, hmm?!”

I stood there, leering at him, knowing what he was doing, but at the time same, he was right and I couldn’t and won’t, deny it.

“Getting distracted by feminine things is a good way to die, but coming from a woman, I’m not surprised that you, as you said, got distracted by mortal impulses.” he finished, placing his hands on his hips.

“Erik, that’s enough, mate!” Jonathan interrupted loudly. In a quick shuffle of steps, he rushed toward Erik’s side, trying to convince him to apologize yet again because he knew that the young woman’s temper would arise, releasing her steam and fiery Aura which he learned about her, from her unfortunate encounter with Nathan in the game room, “Let it go.”

“No, Jonathan…it’s all right.” I announced, “He’s right, he is.” I took steps toward him, “But let me tell you something, you egotistical a**hole, and listen well.” I pushed him backwards, “Pureblood or not, I might be petite or hell, a pissant of a girl in your eyes and Leonus’ but there’s one thing that I am not, and that’s being a coward! True…” I pushed him back once more, “I’m not a skilled warrior like you, and others here, and I don’t know how to yield all of the intricate arcane magics, but I am a warrior in here!” I laid my hands over my chest, “I can tell you’re a pampered spoiled brat, probably never been off this island, and clearly you’re oblivious to what’s taking place in the outside world, on the mainland, where all of the real wars are!” I groaned, “Have you ever been back to the mainland after coming here with your father from Penrith?” I watched as his gray eyes grew wide, “Yes, I know about that, Jonathan told me. But someone like you…” I gestured at him, “wouldn’t stand two seconds out there. I mean sure, you can fight your way through, hacking your enemy down, but that’s easy, anyone can do that to save their own life, but it takes a lot more than picking up a sword to be a warrior.”

“Yza, please…calm down.” Jonathan pleaded.

“I’m fine, Jonathan!” I unintentionally barked, “Your preppy buddy here, needs to hear this because coming here, all I have had to do, is hold onto my values not in what I can do, but in myself, by dealing with your arrogance, Nathan’s unwanted advances and whatever the hell else is coming at me. Neither of us Erik, know what this position Marxus has entrusted me with has in store, so I think that is far more important than dealing with your bullsh*t and perfectionist charm! Yes, I need to learn to yield the sword, and I will, but I will not continue to do so in your presence if you’re going to stand there and judge me, you don’t know me!” I paused, taking a heavy sigh, taking one step closer to look deeper into his gray eyes, “One more thing, then I’m done.” I felt tears stinging my eyes, “You have no idea what I would do to protect this place, that both of my mother and I have grown to love, so if you were to ask me if I think I’d be a good Keeper? I don’t know, but I’d like to think I’d be a good one, and I say that with pride and confidence, not arrogance!” I backed away, “It’s clear that you don’t like me, and that’s fine with me, I don’t f*cking care, so do you and me, a favor and stay away from me! I’ll train with others.” I looked at Jonathan, offering a nod, then turned running off away from the training yard, leaving a large bush nearby to catch fire.

Jonathan and Erik glanced at the bush, watching as two of the walls Guardians attempted putting out the flames but it was close to impossible because it wasn’t an arcane flame.

“Bloody hell…” Erik complained.

“Yeah, no kidding.” Jonathan argued, “What the hell, mate?!”

“Excuse me?!” he looked at Jonathan.

“Don’t play the victim, Erik…please just don’t.”

“This isn’t my fault, you know that right?!” Erik protested.

“No, of course not, it’s all hers.” Jonathan argued, “Is that it?!”

“Well yeah, I mean we were trying to train her and…”

“Erik, shut the f*ck up!” Jonathan shouted, “God, you know I love you like a brother but sometimes you can just be so…” he searched for the words, “f*cking thick-headed and blind. I just…I can’t do this right now.” he shook his head, “But Yza’s right, everything she said, is fact. She does have a big weight on her shoulders and yes she agreed to training, something she didn’t have to accept but here you are, throwing around your arrogance about this or that, knowing how to do this or that when no one cares!” he stretched out his arms, “And so what, she was checking you out, big deal! You’re good lookin’ mate, and you know I don’t mean it like that, but she is a very passionate and heterosexual woman, eyeing something she likes. It’s what women do, she doesn’t let it get in the way of her training, but here you are, blaming her for everything that just happened and yes, that bush that caught fire?!” his blue eyes jumped from his friend to the bush nearby, “that was all her. Fire Demon remember?! And even though she might not know all of the arcane magics like you and me, I wouldn’t doubt what she could do with her natural powers if provoked, think about that next time, if there’s a next time!” he nodded, then backed away, not wanting to spend another moment arguing with his arrogant, and cocky friend.

Erik stood, silently contemplating his reactions and words.

“Sh*t.” he stared at Jonathan’s back as he returned the two daggers to the cabinet. Breaking his gaze, staring at his feet, he released a few deep breaths, feeling like a total a**hole, for both his friend and the young woman, who was brave enough to stand up to him, were right. Returning his own weapon, he left the training yard, searching the estate for her wanting to apologize but his search came up empty-handed as she wasn’t anywhere to be found.

Spending time in the foyer bathroom, I splashed cold water on my face then looked at my reflection. I might have walls, guarding my emotions but I was still a woman who felt deeply, and although I knew where Erik was coming from, using his words and the intent behind them as part of his own training method, he went about it the wrong way, letting his arrogance get in the way. Turning out the light, leaving the bathroom, I headed toward the dining hall where Margaret and Belle sat at one of the tables.

“Hi, Yza.” Belle greeted sweetly.

“Hi.” Margaret smiled.

“Hi.” I smiled, joining them.

“Are you okay?” Margaret inquired, seeing her puffy eyes.

“Yeah, it’s nothing now.” I sniffled, keeping it to myself, “I’ll be fine, don’t worry about me.” I looked at the sisters who are such sweet girls, they hadn’t yet experienced dealing with the issues that come with adulthood.

“Is this about what happened in the training yard?” Margaret asked softly, leaning in across the table.

“How did you know about that?” I wondered.

“We saw Anthony come in, and then soon after we heard all of the shoutin’ out there and well, the windows face that way and we couldn’t help but see what happened between you and Erik.” Margaret revealed, “He might be a little arrogant more often than he should, but he’s really not that bad a guy, just spoiled and used to getting what he wants.” she shrugged.

“I think he’s so cute.” Belle gushed, having a sweet crush.

“Thank you for the advice, sweetie.” I smiled, “And perhaps, I too am to blame.” I bit my lip, thinking maybe it was.

“Well, I think he’s just not used to someone just as outspoken coming into his life, all of our lives, speaking to him like that, and it’s just something everyone has to get used to.” Belle let out a deep sigh.

“And how old are you?” I teased, looking at her sweet face.

“Twelve.” she nodded proudly.

“Twelve.” I chuckled softly, “Well, thank you. Both of you.” I tapped the table, “And listen, don’t rush to grow up so fast to experience life and what the world has to offer. Just take your time and enjoy your youth because it’ll be gone, POOF…” I snapped my fingers, “just like that.”

“We’ve heard that before, our mum hasn’t been afraid to be the overbearing parent that imprints her strict teachings on me and Belle.” Margaret complained.

“Well, from what my mom’s told me about her, she loves you.” I glanced between the sisters, “There’s nothing wrong with it, she wants you to be prepared and maybe, there are some that go a bit overboard with it, but I don’t see the harm in Katrina wanting you to be safe.” I shrugged, “Go easy on her, she has two lovely daughters and being a single mother, I know how hard it can be. It wasn’t easy for my mom either.” I smiled, giving them both something to think about, “Anyway…” I stood from the table, “I’ll catch you guys later. Have a good one, hmm?”

“Okay.” Belle waved, disappointed that she left, “I like her.”

“Me too Belle, me too.” Margaret sighed then looked away.

Heading to the atrium, needing to contemplate a few things, the beautiful green plants with their large leaves and flowers blooming, added a calming environment with a small stone fountain in the center, with fish swimming in its pool. Raising my gaze, the domed roof above, was an interesting pyramid made of glass that was supported by heavy iron beams, the rays of light shone through the panels, illuminating the large atrium with the brightness of the afternoon sun. The plants, flowers and fish received plenty of light that was equally and wisely balanced. I felt so serene and tranquil before I heard a voice enter the atrium. It was like a maze in there, that I did not know where to go so I hid behind some of the tall, large plants and their leaves. Peeking through the gaps, I watched as a young couple stood for only a moment, sharing a quick kiss before scampering around the plants heading through the side door on the other side of the atrium. Sighing softly, I cursed as flames erupted nearby.

“Sh*t…” I patted the fire out, a fire that didn’t burn my hands, “sorry.” I could feel the plants, a living thing, discomfort from the scorching heat, “God damn it, Yza control yourself before you set this place on fire!” I groaned then sat on the ground, taking slow, deep breaths, closing my eyes and focusing only on myself. I sat there for the longest time, sketching some of the plants in my notebook that I managed to conjure with the use of a minor arcane spell from the pages of the Demon book. I hadn’t realized the time until the light from above had faded, “Damn.” I quickly stood, holding the notebook close. Rushing through the atrium and making my way outside, standing by the front doors of the manor, I suddenly heard those loud, eerie and horrifying squeals and howls erupting from outside the walls, echoing in the distance. The sounds were horrible, and there must have been, who knows how many, outside the iron gates and the circumference of the wall around the estate.

Guardians atop the wall, both Demons and Wraiths, watched through the fog that crept across the island, faint shadows and figures of creatures spreading out in different directions in attempts to find a way through the slate wall. Shouting out, ringing a bell somewhere on the wall, residents began quickly rushing to their rooms in their dwellings and soon after, the bell in RP&V could be heard ringing as well; people fearfully scampered around nervously, hiding away in their stores and shops, the Inn, pub and their homes, locking the doors behind them and closing their shutters. Large chunks of crystal were placed around each home and the village, protecting everyone from the monstrous beasts.

Looking at the evening sky, I came to learn when the bells ring, dusk approached and everyone had to be inside, it didn’t matter where, just as long as they were in a sanctuary. I knew those were the creature I had heard nightly, but this was the first time I had been outside the security of my room. What they were, I didn’t know, and I don’t think I wanted to know, but glancing across the estate toward the inner gates, Guardians clustered around, making sure they had securely locked it, adding extra layers of protection. Watching as the gate sealed with a tall barrier of arcane magic shimmering in place before fading, I could feel the magic surging through the air. However, where I stood, the Guardians looked to be an inch in size because of the distance between the gates and Ravenstone Manor. Suddenly, taking steps back, I bumped into someone, and thinking it might’ve been Erik, I turned seeing Jonathan standing baffled with a faint, but cute, grin.

“Sorry.” I apologized.

“No problem.” he teased, “Habit of yours though, is it?”

“Funny.” I chuckled, then glanced back at the gates, “What the hell is out there, or better yet, what’re they?” I looked at Jonathan, waiting for an answer.

“Marxus didn’t tell you?”

“There’s a lot he didn’t tell me.” I complained.

“All right, calm down.” he placed his hands on her trembling shoulders, “I’ll tell you, okay?” he nodded, staring deeply into her eyes, “What you’re hearing, they’re Boar-wolves.” he said softly, as if their existence and behavior were nothing new.

“Boar-what?!” I asked in confusion, widening my eyes.

“Boar-wolves.” he shrugged, “I think I’ll let Marxus explain, but I’m sure you already know about the curfew.” he referred to hearing the bells signaling the late hour, “The gates, as you can see…” he looked across the estate toward the inner barrier, “are closed, so no one will be allowed through, and it’s not recommended to walk the grounds either.” he spoke calmly, “If you want a jump to your room, I can help? I just took Sarah so it won’t be a problem.” he smiled.

“Um, no I’ll be fine, thanks.” I appreciated the offer.

“Okay. If you change your mind, let me know.” he waved then backed away, and for the first time since knowing him, and up close, I watched as a Demon opened a portal, simply waving a hand, creating a void with vacuum suction inward, and once he stepped through quickly, it vanished leaving a faint breeze in the already, evening air.

“Cool.” I admired, feeling the lingering energy left behind.

Voices loudly talking among their groups, quickly rushed back to their rooms and designated dwelling. Returning to the manor, peering through the colored glass, watching all of the stragglers scampering across the property, I heard boots echoing behind me across the floor, but didn’t turn to observe who they belonged to. Instead, a male’s voice spoke smoothly,

“Looking for me?”

Turning around, there stood Anthony. Smiling nervously like a school girl with a crush, I cleared my throat, looking away as I tried hiding my blushed face because he stood too close, allowing me to take in his masculine scent and cologne.

“Sorry, but…no.” I rasped softly, “How are you, uh…doing?” I gestured at him, recalling the sparring session from earlier.

“Fit as a fiddle.” he smiled charmingly, “Thank you.”

“You’re welcome.” I looked around, “WHY AM I SO DAMN NERVOUS?” I thought to myself.

“Shouldn’t you be home?” Anthony wondered curiously.

“I was actually on my way but then I heard the Boar-wolves?” I answered suspiciously, “Do you know anything about them?”

“Not much, well just as much as everyone really. They were here long before residents started calling this place home, but that’s about it.” he shrugged casually.

“Mm, well…I just bumped into Jonathan and he suggested to ask Marxus so that’s where I was heading before you came in, trying to win me over with your charms and all.” I folded my arms, confronting his innocent advances.

Inconspicuously taking in the scent around her, Anthony bit his lip, nodding briefly.

“Apologies, little Yza.” he bowed elegantly, “It’s just me, can’t help myself around a beautiful woman.” he gestured at her.

“Well, thank you for the compliment there Romeo, but hold it up.” I teased then realized how that sounded. Looking at him, and his wide eyed expression, I felt utterly embarrassed as I just wanted to crawl in a hole and die, “I didn’t mean that, I…” and burying my face in my hands, I shook my head, “oh my god.”

“It’s all right.” Anthony chuckled lightly, “I think I know, or I am trying to know, what you mean.” he nodded with her, “I’ll see you later, or tomorrow, hmm?”

“Mm-hmm, yeah.” I nodded awkwardly. I could just listen to him speak all day, everyday, with his Italian accent and soft, but masculine voice.

Bowing once more, Anthony smiled then turned, walking out the front doors, strutting all sorts of sexy.

Watching as his image disappeared through the closing doors, that was it, I was one of the women caught up in Anthony’s web. Shaking my head, hearing the squeals continue out in the distance, I turned, rushing up the stairs to the study that was closed, but I could hear two loud, and boisterous voices arguing heatedly from inside.

“For the last time, Leonus…I am telling you, that I wasn’t in the training yard this afternoon!” Marxus argued, becoming agitated with the harassing inquiries, “So please stop making it sound as if I’m incompetent or senile!”

“But I saw you there, so did the girl you’re apparently puttin’ through training, and of course there were a few Guardians in the yard, so you’re calling all of us, all of them lairs?! If it wasn’t you, explain it to me in ways I can understand because this makes no sense!” Leonus answered gruffly, “I know you’re an Immortal, with such power and all that bullsh*t, I cannot and will not deny that, but not even you can be in two places at once, not unless you copy yourself like most, if not all of, the Demons here.”

Listening, I knew Leonus was right in that assumption. Not wanting to intrude on their conversation, I quietly took steps back but unfortunately my foot stepped on a loose board atop the staircase, creaking loudly. Typical old wooden floors. The voices silenced, but I could hear Leonus’ heavy feet stomping toward the door, while releasing a slur of Scottish vulgarities. Suddenly, the door swung open, and there he stood tall in the doorway, tapping his left hand on the door frame, squeezing the door knob with his right.

“Surely Marxus told you when the door is closed, he’s not to be disturbed, yes?” the Scotsman barked, leering at her.

“Yes, which is why I didn’t knock.” I snapped, not needing his arrogance on top of Erik’s today.

“Well, it doesn’t matter. You’re here now, and perhaps maybe you can explain to Marxus…” Leonus paused, stepping aside, “that you and I BOTH witnessed him in the training yard, as did several of the Guardians, including Caleb.”

“Yes, we did.” I nodded, trying to look past Leonus’ bulk, “I…” I looked up at him, “do you mind?” I gestured for him to step aside just a bit more, “C-come on, really?” I protested against his resistance to move.

“Come in, Yzavela…please.” Marxus called out from inside, “Leonus, let her pass.” he stared at the Scotsman’s back, “Now, if you don’t mind.”

A moment of hesitation passed as Leonus stepped aside fully, allowing the young woman to pass him, entering the study.

“I hope you know what you’ve signed up for becoming…” he eyed her up and down mockingly, “the new Keeper, girl.” he scrunched his mouth forward, “Surely a little pipsqueak like ye won’t be able to handle such a grand place as this, and all of the residents, and it’s a shame too, having been left in such delicate hands that yield no strength. Good luck trying to get the day’s events straightened out, he has no memory of any of it, senile old man!”

“You know something, Leonus?” I spoke before Marxus had a chance to protest, “You’re not the first jacka** today that has told me I don’t have what it takes to run this place, and I told him that strength doesn’t always come from holding weapons, or in your case, being a Lycynian using your fists, even using your muscles.” I glanced at him up and down intimidatingly, “I may be a pipsqueak, or a piss ant, but obviously I have the one thing that you do not have, something that Marxus was looking for and wanted, so what do you have Leonus, other than your strength that can, eventually, fail?” I slowly folded my arms, “Hmm?”

Leonus glared at her, studying her petite form standing there. Raising his gaze above her toward the desk, the Immortal sat quietly with a smirk, leaning forward.

“This isn’t over!” Leonus complained gruffly then turned. He stormed out, slamming the door behind him.

Sighing heavily, I turned, facing Marxus.

“I’m sorry if I interrupted whatever that was. Or maybe I did you a favor?” I took a seat, sitting across from him at the desk.

“I told you that if you ever needed to speak with me, the door is always open, even if it is closed.” Marxus leaned his back further against the chair, “As far as Leonus, I’ve dealt with that man more times than I can count, but he just doesn’t seem to learn from his choices, or mistakes, but today he is so adamant that I was present in the training yard when I am trying to tell him that I was not.” he stared at her quickly, “Is something wrong?” he took notice that she studied him.

“No, there’s nothing wrong but he’s right. You were there.” my voice uttered the words softly.

“Even Erik and Jonathan saw you, I mean…” I scratched my arm, “you asked them to finish my training for the day, which…” I looked away shamefully, “didn’t end well.”

“But I was…” Marxus argued, trying to conceal a sigh, “you know what, it’s not important, back to you.” he cleared his throat.

Squinting my dark eyes, I knew he wanted to end the topic.

“I know why you’re here.” he finished. Sᴇaʀᴄh thᴇ Findɴovel.ɴet website on Gøøglᴇ to access chapters of novels early and in the highest quality.

“How?” I watched as he stood, walking around the desk, then stopped, looking at me as he tapped his index finger against his temple, “Oh, right…how can I forget.” I teased.

“The Boar-wolves.” he muttered, taking another seat across from her, crossing his legs. Shifting elegantly into a position that felt comfortable, adjusting his vest, he began explaining the appearance of the creatures that were heard outside the walls. He didn’t know where the creatures they unfortunately call Boar-wolves came from, or how they originated, but he heard stories from harbor men working on the dock centuries ago, that a creature of some great deformity erupted from one of the cargo trunks that arrived on the island. The men stated they couldn’t get much of a look at the beast because it ran off, hiding in the forest, taking up its own residency there. At the time, you must understand, this island was full wildlife from the Viking settlement so I kept them in check, as well as making sure the wold boars and yes, wolves, were kept out of the barn away from the livestock but it seemed their numbers dwindled dramatically, and it wasn’t by anyone’s hand at the time. I am though, at a loss for words as to how it, or they, managed to reproduce…” he paused, slowly swinging his foot that was crossed, “leading to its increased population.” he finished, pinching the ridge between his eyes, “The Guardians claim they camouflage themselves within the thick brush of the forest and across the island to move about, as well as the evening and morning fog that blankets the Isle. Although, from the Guardian’s reports of their habits, they do not, and have never, ventured out during the day, even if there is a thicker fog or clouded days, but only emerge at dusk, and all throughout the evening until dawn.”

“So that explains why Bobby kept saying he wanted to get us here before DUSK.” I made air quotes. Looking at Marxus, he sat with a look on confusion, “Nevermind, I’m sorry.” I laid my hands in my lap, “But have they ever attacked anyone? Or have they ever made it through the gates?” I worried, hoping that explained the heavy duty security of the double gates.

“There were stories in the beginning, before we had put all of the protection barriers in place, that women and children had been taken, and for what purpose no one knows. I don’t think they wanted to know, to be honest. Some at the time, thought it was for food, for they killed everything on the island, while others claim the women were taken for breeding purposes.” Marxus felt a lump in his throat, feeling uncomfortable at the thought, as did she sitting across from him, “They have never posed a serious threat to the Isle until recently, attempting to jump or dig through the walls surrounding RP&V and even Ravenstone Manor but they’re both too high to climb and too thick to claw their way through.” he shifted in his seat once more, “And even if they attempted digging through, I do not believe they’d get very far.” he looked at her, “And in answer to the second part of your question, there was only one that made it through the outer gate and into the tunnel, but it was long before we had the inner doors in place, thankfully those that are magically inclined, the Demon Guardians were swift, placing a barrier in its path, before it was killed and burned within the tunnel. They never spoke of it, or what it looked like, for I don’t think any of them want to speak of it, much less had the chance to gaze upon it close enough.” he closed his eyes, then glanced toward the patio doors.

“Hmm.” I moaned softly, “So why haven’t you done anything to stop them, or destroy them?” I wondered, “I mean, if they are as dangerous as you claim them to be, taking women and children, why haven’t you? They’ve certainly given you more than enough reason, and seem aggressive enough.” I looked at his patio, still hearing their loud squeals and howls out in the distance.

“Everything has the right to live, so I let them be, but now I do fear that they are evolving like everything in time, or over generations and there have been many. The Guardians have sadly reported occasional deaths, watching as they dragged bodies into the forest, but that took place many-many years ago. Probably long before you were even born, so yes, that was about twenty-five years ago now.” Marxus answered in a deep sigh, “But…”

“It’s never a good thing starting a sentence with BUT.”

“But…” Marxus grinned, looking at her, “something, I do not know for sure, but something among them much larger than the beasts that run the island, has attempted breaking its bulk through the outer gate but because it’s iron, those attempts failed. However, it does worry me, that their attacks on the wall and RP&V have grown more aggressive on a monthly basis.”

“Monthly basis?” I leaned back, “Wh-why?”

“Well…” he leaned forward, “I’ve come to realize that they’re attracted to, uh…” he stared into her curious face, rubbing his hands together as he rested his elbows on his knees, “how can I put this in a way that won’t make us feel uncomfortable?” he felt awkward.

“What is it?”

“I can’t say.” he stood abruptly, “It’s inappropriate for a man of my age to be having with a young woman, especially alone, but all I’ll say is that…” he turned to her, rushing the words, “there are many young girls coming of age into their young womanhood.”

“Coming of age into womanhood.” I whispered, “Th-the only thing that explains is…” then I realized what he was trying to respectfully say, “oh, OH! That?! But that’s, I mean…it’s, eww!” I felt nauseous, and uncomfortable, “Oh...god! That’s…” I held my hands over my mouth.

Marxus felt relieved that she figured it out on her own.

“I might have been married, with a daughter of my own close to your age, but I never had the chance to watch her come to her womanhood.” his expressive eyes showed his sadness but then he blinked several times, trying to hide his tears, “But it unfortunately isn’t the only threat drawn to that change.” he spoke softly, “Because for the Lycynians, it represents mating season as young woman are now, well you know, and for the Wraiths? Well, it’s the blood that…”

“DO NOT…finish that sentence!” I objected, holding my up my hands in protest, “Talk about something else, please!” the lump in my throat felt bigger, and trying to swallow, fighting off the urge to eject my lunch on the rugs, I gulped nervously.

“Gladly.” Marxus waved his left hand toward the desk, where a glass of water appeared. Reaching for it, handing it to her, he offered, “Here.”

“Thank you.” I gently took the glass, quickly gulping it down. Once it was empty, softly placing it on a coaster on the desk, I looked at Marxus, pestering gently, “Marxus, can I ask you something?” I received a nod in reply, “Why were you telling Leonus that you weren’t in the training yard today? I mean, I don’t know the history between the two of you, but thinking he’s a liar, you’re also calling me one.” I frowned, “I was only there because of the letter that you sent to me, ask Jonathan, you handed it to him, to deliver to me.”

Marxus remained silent, knowing he wasn’t present, but yet he also knew he couldn’t lie, for she would know if he had.

“Sometimes, Little One…things are better left unsaid.”

“Mm-hmm.” I moaned, letting it slide for the time being knowing he was trying to dismiss the subject, “So you’ve said women and children have been taken over the years, right? Do you, or does anyone, know where they’ve been taken?” I changed the subject.

“No one knows. Wives, sisters, daughters and nieces vanished at dusk, disappearing without a trace. Some, according to the reports, were wandering the island once the curfew bell had sounded, but there was no evidence of a struggle, but strange tracks were all that were left, leading into the forest.”

“So you think these Boar-wolves kidnapped them?” I asked, “What did they do, swing them over their shoulders, carrying them away like horny cavemen?” I mocked, then realized that was inappropriate to say, “Sorry, I didn’t mean that the way it sounded, I was just…I’m just…trying to process all of this.”

“It’s all right, Yzavela.” Marxus rasped, “But I don’t know for sure, no one does, although there have been suspicions, and of course, on one of my many flights with Axeon, I observed the habits, watching as they emerged from the forest, causing the nightly havoc before retreating in the same direction when it was dawn. There are old ruins along the cliff side on the rear side of the island, but I can’t say for sure if that’s where they come from or dwell. Despite their size, according to all of the Guardians reports, and even rare photos that have been taken, they’re incredibly fast but just know, Yzavela…these are just stories, from way back when the Isle first started, so I cannot give credit to any of the fictional reports of this monster, or that one.” he reached out for her hands, giving them a gentle squeeze then withdrew, “But since the island’s residents fear them, barriers were put in place around the homes and RP&V, and since then, there haven’t been recent kidnappings, thank the Heavens.”

“No recent kidnappings, that’s good. But not only do I have a lot to learn about being Keeper still, but now I have to deal with creatures that kidnap people. Fantastic!” I stood, “Next you’re gonna tell me there’s a creature from the black lagoon, stealing god only knows what, that lives somewhere beneath the island. Is there anything else I should know about this place? Like uh, I don’t know…” I shrugged, “Big foot?” then I realized, “Oh wait, you already have one, his name is Leonus.”

Marxus chuckled, walking toward her.

“I’m sorry, I know now isn’t the time for jokes.” I attempted breaking the tension between us.

“Don’t apologize, I understand the frustration all too well.” he grinned, “Just consider our conversations part of all your training, and know that not everything can be physical, yes?” he gently placed his hands on her shoulders, “There are many ways to learn things, I learn things myself everyday, like now, training when I don’t recall doing it, or other much stranger occurrences. It seems I have a doppelganger roaming the Isle, or a Demon that’s playing some cruel game and I must find out who it is, and why they’re doing it, before their actions bring harm or chaos to the peace of our home.”

“Good to hear you’ve accepted the possibility of having a so-called doppelganger because there are times when you just do not seem like yourself, having a extra spring in your step and all that Marxus-jazz, or whatever.” I grinned.

“Marxus-jazz/” he raised a curious brow.

“Well, yeah.” I shrugged, “That’s the only I can explain it.” I smiled, then continued, “So let’s see…” I made a mental checklist, “learn about Boar-wolves, check.” I checked the air, “And a Marxus that doesn’t remember quite a few things, and a possible Demon or doppelganger playing tricks, check and check.” I sighed, “F*ck me.”

“You are most amusing, Yzavela. I cannot deny that maybe you are too outspoken for your own good but that’s a good trait, it’ll help you now, and in the future. Never lose sight of that, always speak the truth, even when others don’t want to hear it.” Marxus advised softly, “Now, it’s late and I’m sure you’re tired after your training from today, so go home and get some rest.” he turned, guiding her to the door, “But do me a favor…” he paused, “please know I’m not playing cruel or dangerous games with you, so if there are moments where I do not seem like myself, use your senses to unravel the mystery when, and where, I cannot, hmm?”

“Okay.” I nodded, “Thank you.” I leaned in, giving him a brief hug I sensed he didn’t expect. Pressing my ear against his vest, his heart raced a few beats too fast.

Holding out his arms in a moment of surprise, in that brief moment, he saw his daughter greeting him, after one of his many returns home from tending to quests and duties given by the Order of Men. Returning the hug affectionately for a single passing moment, he then pulled away nervously.

“You’re welcome, Little One.” he nodded, “Goodnight.”

“Goodnight.” I returned the nod, then slipped into the hall.
