The Alpha King’s Virgin by Charmeleon Chapter 91

Chapter 91

AMARIS

At Egnor’s request, we set up camp for the night at the castle. The men were exhausted from the battle and needed to rest to regain strength and to heal from their wounds.

Her mourners removed Queen Elif’s body and buried her under the Tree of Life in the heart of the forest. Thalia Yenfir went to pay their respects among Queen Elif’s mourners.

Egnor, the newly appointed Elfin King, wasn’t one of them. He provided food and drink for all the warriors. Despite the victory, the mood was somber. In the aftermath of the battle, even nature fell silent mourning the fallen.

It concerned me that Ross didn’t seem to heal as well as I had hoped. He appeared pale and weary. As I approached him where he lay sprawled beside the campfire I heard Lord Greyson berate him. “You are a fool for putting yourself at risk. Do you want my grandchildren to be fatherless? You have no regard for my daughter!”

“I fulfilled my role as Beta. Wasn’t it you who taught me that my first priority was to my king?” Ross thanked an Elfin maid for bringing him food.

“That was before you married my daughter and got her pregnant.” Lord Greyson muttered in response.

“Well, I owe you a debt of gratitude, Ross, for saving my life.” I took a seat next to him. “You are indeed one of my most devoted subjects.” As I spoke I looked pointedly at Lord Greyson, the man I regarded like a father.

“I am also your friend, Amaris. You are like a brother to me.” Ross said, “You would have done the same if the position were reversed.”

I probably would have. “Of course.”

Lord Greyson excused himself, leaving me alone with Ross.

“Don’t mind him. My father–in–law doesn’t approve of me.” Ross grinned bleakly.

Why didn’t you t

tell me Cara was expecting? You should be with your mate.” Had I known I would have ordered him to stay.

“Don’t start with me, Amaris. You need me.” He smirked at me. “Cara understands my duty to you. She is a strong she–wolf. Besides, she’s still early in her pregnancy.”

I stared into the flames, not seeing them, but the face of my love, my Raine. How I ached for her, to hold her in my arms

again.

“We’ll get her back, Amaris. Soon.” Ross laid a hand on my shoulder.

I looked back at him. “It couldn’t be soon enough.”

At first light, we gathered with the Elfin army, King Egnor at the forefront, for the long march to the High Magus‘ fortress.

The air crackled with tension as we moved through the northern boundaries of the forest. A chill wind rustled through the trees and Rage restlessly paced in the recesses of my mind, aware of the change in the atmosphere. The forest creatures

remained hidden, their anxious chirping and rustling audible as we made our way deeper into their sanctuary. The slightest sound did nothing to improve my frayed nerves.

With heightened awareness, we cautiously made our way through the dense forest, and then shifted into wolves to move with more agility. The fae darted through the trees, making swift progress, blending in with their surroundings-

We’re getting closer to the border.” Egnor caught up to inform me. “We must be careful. The Magus is famous for his elaborate magical traps.”

I shifted back to human form to talk to him. “Surely you have some tricks of your own, not so?”

He chuckled wryly. “I won’t lay claim to that, Amaris. Quindin Thael is a powerful sorcerer and not someone we should  S~ᴇaʀᴄh the (ꜰind)ɴʘvel.nᴇt website on Gøøglᴇ to access chapters of novels early and in the highest quality.

underestimate.”

“He has my queen, Egnor. I don’t care how powerful he is. Besides, Raine has a power of her own.”

Then why hasn’t she tried to break free?‘ Rage voiced the concern that nagged at me for some time.

A Pixie scout came flying towards us. “King Egnor, something is wrong. There is a dark mist coming in from the east.”

“Shadow Dragons!” a dwarf shouted, raising his battle axe. “Nasty creatures!”

The wind had grown into a full–scale gale, whipping the trees into a frenzied dance as the dark mist rolled our way.

“How do we fight them?” I yelled over the howling noise. I’ve never encountered them before.

Egnor whistled, high and piercing, calling a host of fairies, sprites and pixies that rushed towards us. “Don’t get caught in the shadows. Stay together. My fairies will cast a ring of light around us.”

“Archers, ready your bows! Light them up!” he shouted to the Elvin Archers,

Lord Greyson shouted out orders to the wolves to get into formation as the fae spread out to form a protective ring around the area. But the wind proved too strong for the slight creatures. It blew them about like thistles.

“This isn’t going to work!” I yelled at Lord Greyson, Can we outrun them?”

“Impossible, Sire! They are too fast.” Lord Greyson shouted back. “They will absorb our life force if they catch up to us. We

can’t risk it”

The archers stood ready with their magical, flaming arrows

“Fire!” shouted Egnor, and the blazing arrows flew into the growing darkness.

A bone–chilling roar sounded as the arrows hit their mark. Three pairs of red eyes glowed eerily back at us from within the

shadows.

The archers reloaded as fast as possible. The wolves growled and howled impatiently. We weren’t used to standing idly by.

“There must be something we can do?” I yelled at Egnor.

“Fearie fire!” he screamed at the winged creatures, raising his sword

The tiny creatures launched themselves at the Shadow Dragons, blasting them with rays of light. The shadows dissipated

to reveal the three dragons‘ substantial form.

I saw my opportunity and made my decision. “Wolves! Attack!” Shifting into my wolf form, I charged forward, leading the attack.

Flaming arrows whizzed past us. The dark beasts howled in agony at the relentless onslaught of arrows and fairies.

That served as a distraction for my wolves to surround them. Leading my pack, we tore at their vulnerable areas, weakening them further. I went in for the kill.

The frenzy of the hunt took over, and we ripped and tore at their flesh until there was no more movement. In unison, we lifted our heads to sing to the moon, thanking the Goddess for our victory.
