Chapter Twenty

I was seriously freaking out not just because we were trapped here, the papers, researches and all the videos of this island were gone. They took it with them. The secret of the island was going to be exposed and again I don’t know why I feel so protective over this island like it’s my responsibility.

We’ve gone to the leader of Eossoda and told him what’s happened and he was so angry but not from us. He said that we were welcomed to stay with them but we’re not allowed to build any kind of a transportation method. We argued with him and said that we needed to get home but he refused saying that the rules must be followed no matter what.

“If he doesn’t want us to leave then we can call for help right?” Erik said searching in his bag and I remembered that he’s got a satellite phone.

“That’s right. We can do that.” I sat up straight excitedly and Erik kept looking and searching but didn’t find anything. His face fell.

“It’s not there.” Erik said disappointingly.

“What do you mean it’s not there? look again.” I said.

“I put it in the bag last night but it’s not here now.” Erik threw the bag away angrily.

We sat silently for the rest of the day thinking of what we should do.

We lived on Eossoda for several days and it surprised me how much I didn’t know Tristan and professor Cyril. Turned out that Tristan was a very good cook; the guy can nearly make every single plate on this planet.

And professor Cyril was a really kind man who kept telling me that I reminded him so much of his daughter. To be honest he was treating me like his daughter.

I felt like I was living among my new family.

This morning Tristan told us that he wanted to show us a lake and we said that they’ll go in an hour. The sun was shining brightly and I wanted to see the lake in the light. I told them to go now but they were too lazy and Lilly, her brother and Tristan told me to go and they’ll catch up with me.

So I walked asking some people on the way till I arrived to the lake. It was so deep and still. There were little kids playing together near the lake. I think it’s dangerous to let kids play near a deep lake like this but their parents were sitting keeping a close eye on them. So I guess it was okay.

I leaned on a little on my knees to touch the water and held some in my hand and suddenly someone hit me from behind and I couldn’t keep my balance and fell into the water but not before hearing my name called from behind or maybe I was hallucinating or something.

I tried floating or swimming but I couldn’t. I’m drowning. I’m drowning. I couldn’t breathe and I ran out of oxygen. My body was drowning slowly like a rock. I was trying desperately to move my body and help myself but my mind was fiercely forbidding me from doing anything.

I felt the now familiar weight on my shoulders like I was carrying something so heavy and I pushed it down with all of my might. My lungs were screaming for oxygen as I hit the hard ground. Surrendering to my lack of oxygen and leaving that heavy weight take over me.

A puff of air hit me making me open my eyes and sit straight coughing and trying to get the water out of my throat. I draw sharp breaths. The air burning my lungs for the first couple of breaths then I managed to breath normally again.

I was so dizzy and my head throbbed strongly. I looked around me, I saw Lilly and Erik standing next to me looking so concerned.

I was so shocked to figure out what has happened. I glanced behind me. The lake was there and my clothes were damp. It wasn’t hard to know what’s happened but for me. My mind wasn’t able to understand that I was drowning in the water.

I found Aaron sitting on his knees right next to me. His clothes were also damp.

“Thank you.” I whispered still panting from the fear. He held my hand helping me up on my feet. The image was black at first then it became normal. I put my hair away from my face and looked around me.

I saw all the people and the kids that were here before I fall into the water staring at me. Their eyes didn’t move away for a second they didn’t even blink. I was so uncomfortable and wanted to scream at them to look away but something did grab my attention.

Tristan was standing from a distance looking so perplexed and puzzled. I looked at Aaron to ask him but he didn’t give me the chance. He pushed me through the people and we kept walking, Erik and Lilly walking behind us.

He didn’t stop till we arrived at the tent and got inside.

“What was wrong with these people? And what happened to Tristan?” I asked him instantly.

“You were glowing, Amber. More than any other time, like really golden shine.” He finally explained to me.

“And why would they be so confused about it? They could be afraid not confused.” I told him. Lilly tossed me a towel. I caught it and started drying my hair. The only thing that stayed damp.

“I don’t know about that. But something happened this time and I highly doubt that it was a coincidence.” He answered me.

“What happened?” I asked.

“There was something like an earthquake on the island and, I don’t know exactly, but the water started drowning the island. It only lasted for a minute and then the water retracted again so...” He stopped.

“Are you saying that I was the one that moved the island. That’s insane.” I told him in disbelief.

“You could be right. It’s impossible to believe but it’s what I saw.” He told me shrugging. I sat nervously biting my nails.

“It may has a thing to do with your glowing.” Lilly told me.

“You think?” I asked her. Why was I that nervous? This is impossible to be true anyways.

Erik was going to say something but stopped when he noticed Tristan standing at the entrance of the tent. He had a blank look on his face.

“You should come meet my father right now.” He said in a monotonic way and then left without another word. I swallowed the lump in my throat and looked at Aaron.

Did I do something wrong?
