Chapter 8 

The feeling that he could finally hold his head up high was especially prominent. 

To him, it was better that way. No matter what had triggered Michael to have a change of heart, since Michael was smart enough to take his side, it would only be logical if he played along. Besides, he still needed to take control of the situation as soon as possible. 

By doing so, he could also prove his leadership skills rather than relieve Michael of his duty on the spot. 

After all, if he were to get rid of Michael as the chief deputy sheriff, he himself might have been able to assert his power, but that would also brand him as a superior who was incapable of uniting and cooperating well with the subordinates. 

After a fleeting moment of consideration, Yves was immediately all smiles as he descended a couple of flights of stairs steadily. 

Wearing a polite mien, he shook hands with Michael. “Good to see you, Michael. Have you had your lunch already?” 

“Yes. My daughter came back today and insisted that I have a meal with her. That was why I didn’t even join the meeting this morning. I was just about to pay you a visit to do some self–reflection, sheriff?” 

The way Yves greeted Michael and his initiative of going down two flights of stairs was more than sufficient to show his willingness to accept Michael as one of the team. 

Michael, too, was not slow to notice it. Instead of formally addressing Yves, Michael called him the sheriff altogether, not to mention assuming an ever–so–respectful posture the entire while. 

The difference in the said salutation was significant, for it would bring them closer and foster a more amicable relationship. 

Moreover, for Michael to utter the word “self–reflection” on his own initiative came as quite a surprise to the rest. Everyone knew that it was purely a matter of him having a meal with his daughter. Never would things have to escalate to the extent where a chief deputy sheriff like himself must apologize to the sheriff because of that.. 

The only reason Michael said it was to affirm his commitment as a chief deputy sheriff to Yves in front of the crowd. 

For a moment there, the atmosphere between them suddenly grew much livelier. 

In the meantime, Aurelia was driving while answering a phone call from Marcellus. 

“Where are you? Didn’t I tell you to wait for me at home?” 

“My mom called me and asked me to go back for dinner. She wanted to celebrate my birthday in advance! I’m already on my way home now!” 

Such gentle words might have escaped her, but the visage on her face was as cold as the winter. 

The man on the other end of the line fell silent momentarily. 

A vicious thought then popped into Aurelia’s head. She wondered if Marcellus, who was bent on divorcing her, would feel regret and guilty at that juncture. 

Then again, the next second, she started sneering. 

She figured that a man as bitter and cruel as Marcellus would never warm to her, let alone become softhearted and feel an ounce of guilt for her. 

Had Marcellus taken the husband–and–wife relationship they shared into account, he would not have betrayed Michael without any hesitation. 

Aurelia secretly snorted at that thought. 

“What’s the hurry, Marc? I’m almost there! Give me at most ten minutes! Wait for me!” 

She decided to speak since not a sound came from Marcellus on the other end of the line.. 

Marcellus remained quiet for some time before finally showing her some concerns placidly. “Take your time and drive slowly. I’m not in any hurry. We’ll talk when you reach.” 

“Oh!” answered the woman with her usual obedient tone. Little did the man know that the expression on her face was nonchalant and that it was tinged with scorn. 

In fact, Aurelia had not been speeding right from the beginning. After answering the phone, she drove even slower than before. 

It was then that the others on the road soon realized that the expensive BMW coupe in the lane beside them was moving at a speed not much faster than a bicycle despite having tremendous horsepower. 

There had been another car that drove side by side with Aurelia in the other lane earlier. The driver, who was bored to death, was particularly amused as he curled his lips upward. 

“Hayden, did you see that? That woman’s interesting!” 

“Chat her up if you have a crush on her. Whatever it is, I’m not interested!” 

The one being called was a young man sitting in the passenger seat, Hayden Yeager. Even in such sunless, cold weather of early spring, he still wore a pair of overlarge black sunglasses to cover his face. 

“I know you’re in a bad mood after being criticized by your grandpa, but you’re already away from home and hanging around with me in my hometown. Why are you still pulling a long face instead of chilling and having fun?” 

The driver’s mood did not seem to be affected by Hayden’s frosty, disdainful countenance at all. If anything, he was still able to keep up his great interest as he went on, I’m telling the truth. You didn’t see how the woman drove at a normal speed at first, but after someone called her, she drove as slow as a tortoise crawling! Don’t you find her character amusing?” 

“It’s just a spoiled woman. If you’re that interested, come with me to the big cities. You’ll easily find such princesses everywhere in the streets. I guarantee that you’ll be entertained all day long!” 

Hayden was not wrong in a sense. 

Even though he had only spared a glance at Aurelia’s BMW, he still saw clearly that the car model was one which was worth a 

fortune. 

In his opinion, women who could afford such a car in that era would either be mistresses or darling daughters of affluent 

families. 

No matter which category that woman fitted, Hayden had no interest whatsoever. 

“You know what, Hayden? You’re really becoming a bore! How about we make a bet?” 

“On what?” 

“I bet that this lady’s going to turn out to be a tough nut. You’ll never win her over. Dare to try?” 

“I already said I’m not interested in this sort of woman!” 

“Forget it if you dare not take up the challenge. I won’t look down on you, so you don’t have to-” 

“Enough! I know you’re trying to provoke me, so you’d better stop it! But I’ll give you a chance today. I have time to kill, anyway. Tell me what the stake is. Mind you, I won’t bother making a move if you’re a miser!” 

“Didn’t you have your eye on my flagship Mulliner 728 this morning? As long as you have what it takes to make her your woman in three days, that treasure of mine will be yours for the taking!” 

“Fuck! Are you serious, dude?” 

Initially, Hayden was leaning against the car seat lazily. Upon hearing the mentioned wager, he could not stop himself from removing his sunglasses, seemingly surprised. 

Of course, it made sense for Hayden to be shocked, for the Bentley Mulliner 728 was indeed a valuable asset to own. 

It was specially customized, not to mention the world’s limited flagship model.
