Growling Humans?

Macy began barking, startling me to wake up. As I opened my eyes I could hear the sound of things getting knocked over and broken against the tile. I stood up quickly and followed the noise to the kitchen with Macy behind me. I stayed behind the wall and peaked around the corner. There were about ten people all crouched on the ground eating food. The cabinets were thrown open and there was stuff everywhere. I slowly stepped out and looked at them with confusion.

What the hell?!

How did they get in here? Why are they in here?

One of them looked up from their meal and growled at me.

Did a person just growl at me like a dog? God, I am losing my mind.

The person growled again, showing his teeth.

Okay this is freaking weird.

I put my hands up, “Hey. Can you talk to me? I don’t want to hurt you.”

They all looked up at me now and stood up. They began to back away like they were afraid. I bent down and picked up an apple, holding it out to them, “It’s okay. You can eat. I just want to know if you can talk. Or at least if you can what is going on out there.”

They looked even more scared and took off running out the kitchen and through the front door.

“No wait! Don’t go!”

They were down the street before I made it to the door.

I am never going to find someone that knows anything.

Macy looked up at me and nudged my leg. I walked back inside.

They really made a mess in here. Well... I guess I will get to cleaning.

I wiped down all the counters and swept up the floor. As I was closing the cabinets I noticed something that wasn’t there.

Food.

They ate and destroyed so much of it.

I am going to have to go out to find some.

The pain came back in my head.

“Don’t worry about me. Go have fun today. I was actually thinking of going out to get groceries anyways.”

“I love you!”

The pain died down.

Mom. Please be safe. I hope I will find you soon. I don’t think I can stand being alone for much longer.

Macy licked my hand, bringing me out of my daze.

“Okay. Okay. I will stop daydreaming! You crazy dog!”

I looked through the window.

It is going to get dark soon. I should probably getting ready for dinner and plan the day out for tomorrow.

I looked over at Macy who just curled up on the kitchen floor.

How am I going to drive her around. I can’t just leave her here. I don’t know when I will be back or if I can even remember my way back.

My brain got shocked for the thousandth time.

My dad’s old side car he got for me. He bought it for me a long time ago as a joke if I ever got a boyfriend or girlfriend. It probably is still in the alley somewhere.

I walked out the back door to the alley and scanned the area.

Yes it is still here!

I grabbed my keys and ran out to my bike, driving it into the alley. I found some tools in the piles of boxes out there and within ten minutes the car was attached to my bike.

That will do. Anything is better than holding her and trying to steer at the same time.

I walked back in to see Macy moved to the couch and was fast asleep.

Cute.

Now I just have to figure out the food problem. I searched the shelves and cabinets to find a can of chicken noodle soup and some canned tuna.

I hope Macy likes tuna.

While cooking the soup, I heard Macy come trotting into the kitchen. I chuckled when she immediately came to me and sat down, making sure to nudge my leg with her head. I peeled open the can of tuna and set it down which she seemed to down in a few seconds. She sat with me until I was done cooking my meal and eating it.

She wondered with me upstairs and seemed to make my bed her new home as she flopped down taking up the whole bed. She let out a giant breath when she was comfortable with her new spot.

Well I hope you are happy. Now I have to find a new place to sleep.

I looked over at my bathroom, remembering I haven’t showered in a couple of days. I walked in turning on the hot water, waiting for it to steam up.

I love boiling hot showers.

I quickly slipped my clothes off and stood under the water, letting it flow down my body. Letting everything that happened over the past two days wash away. After about twenty minutes I stepped out of the shower and dried off, throwing on some pajamas. I stood in front of the mirror seeing my short, black hair messy and my pale skin turned slightly pink from the temperature of the water but, something was off.

My eyes that were almost grey have turned a bright color blue. They almost looked like the sky at how bright they were.

That is weird.

I made my way back into my room and over to my bookshelf.

Shocked again.

Hello, my friends.

I have always enjoyed books. Their smell. The feel of the pages under my fingers.

I pulled out a random book and opened it. My mind panicked.

I couldn’t read anything on the page.

The words just looked like little black scribbles instead of words.

Why can’t I read?

I pulled out another book.

Then another.

And another.

No...

I need to read. I can’t live without my books. They are the only thing that makes me feel alive. My life is falling apart. There is no one to talk to. I can’t do the one thing I enjoy.

I felt Macy lay down next to me.

I was holding a book in my hand and I saw the page started to get wet as tears dripped from my eyes.

I can’t live like this.

I fell asleep on the floor, holding a book to my chest while Macy curled up next to me. Filling me with warmth. Comforting me.

She is the only thing that is giving me hope in this world of loneliness.
