Chapter 13

The following morning I woke before my alarm. I stretched and rolled over in the soft, comfortable bed. Staring at–my bedroom ceiling, I thought about my conversation with Victor the previous afternoon.

“You can’t be serious about a fake engagement,” I told Victor.

“I’m very serious,” he replied. “What do you have to lose, Daisy? We both know you want William. Stop accepting what life hands you, and go after what you want.”

“It sounds risky,” I said. “What if you’re just tricking me into marrying you?”

Victor laughed. “To be honest with you, I would prefer being a single billionaire leader instead of being a married one. You clearly don’t want an open marriage, and I can’t picture myself staying with one person for my entire life.”

Victor’s proposal was shocking and exciting. He seemed sure I could have William as my lover. I wanted to say yes, but I told Victor I needed to think about it first.

That’s when Victor suggested I try what he had in mind before we told my father I would marry him.

I agreed, and Victor said we would discuss his plan more today after school.

When I arrived at school that morning, almost everywhere I went, people were whispering behind my back. Dozens of times, I heard my name mentioned and looked in that direction, and the group discussing me would quickly walk away.

It got on my nerves badly.

I told Amy what happened when we met at a water cooler between classes.  Sᴇaʀ*ᴄh the FindNøvᴇl.nᴇt website on Gøøglᴇ to access chapters of novels early and in the highest quality.

“Well, it’s like having a movie star in class with us,” Amy teased as we walked to our next class. Then she saw my hurt expression.

“Sorry, Daisy,” she apologized. “I can tell it’s making you feel awful, but they really can’t- help it. Most of them are in awe of you. You are the daughter of the wealthiest and most. important man in our society.”

I shrugged. “That stuff isn’t important to me. I’m just happy to finally know my real father.”

“I know that,” Amy said. “But the other kids in this school don’t know you like I do. Some fear you’ll get them kicked out of school like Bella and Priscilla if they make your mad.”

“Come on! Nob*dy has ever been afraid of me,” I said. “I wouldn’t try to get anyone expelled for no reason. I’m not some monster!”

“You used to be plain Daisy Smith,” Amy said. Now you’re Alex Wilson’s daughter. They don’t know how to act around you yet. Give it a while, be yourself, and let them figure it

out.”

I nodded and followed Amy into math class.

Later, when Amy was late for lunch, I sat at a table with three other girls seated at the other end. Amy and I sat at their table before, and they were always polite. But today, when I sat down and said hello, a look of suspicion spread across their faces, and they moved to another table.

Shocked and embarrassed, I looked down at my lunch and stayed silent. The way people were acting toward me was almost more than I could stand.

With most of the school lunch crowd watching, I grabbed my sandwich and left the cafeteria. Everyone would be more comfortable if I ate by myself.

The sixth period was the worst. Our English teacher broke us into teams to do group assignments. In the past, whenever there was a group assignment, I eagerly helped and did my equal share of the work. It was only fair.

But today, my team members refused to let me do anything. They listened to my ideas and then told me to relax while they finished the project.

I didn’t know what to say that would put them more at ease with me, so I just sat quietly while they wrote the essay. No matter what my status was, I didn’t fit in.

Could Victor really help me become a popular girl who William couldn’t resist?

After school, Amy noticed I was more down than before and suggested we spend some time on the school’s rooftop. She knows I have a crush on William, and we often. secretly watch William’s football practices from there.

William is a great athlete. Although he was usually aloof and expressionless, he was a strong and fierce player on a football field. It was mesmerizing to watch him play. And he looked incredible in his uniform.

I imagined what it would be like to let him hold me in his arms. Those thoughts reminded me of Victor’s proposal. I needed to know more about his plan.

“I have to get to the restaurant,” Amy said. “Dad’s waiting on me. Are you feeling any better?”

-I nodded. “You were right. I need to be patient. Things will work out eventually. Tell

your dad I said hello. I’ll visit him as soon as I can.”

“I will.” Amy said and gave me a little hug. “See you tomorrow.”

I gathered my things and searched the field for one last glimpse of William before taking the stairs to the first floor and exiting the building.

But after I stepped outside. I was besieged by reporters shouting questions and flashbulbs popping in my face.

“Miss Wilson, how do you feel about being Alex Wilson’s lost heiress?” a tabloid reporter shouted.

“Alberta, did you have students you didn’t like expelled from school?” another reporter velled a second later.

I spun in a circle, desperately looking for a way out of the crowd of reporters and onlookers. Dozens of voices were yelling. “Alberta”

reporters

Their voices melded into a buzzing sound that echoed through my head. The came closer, pushing microphones into my face and asking even more questions.

One of the microphones hit my glasses, making them fly from my face. With the crowd of reporters squeezing closer, I dropped to my knees and searched for them before the glasses got stepped on and smashed.

Everything was blurry as I searched the ground around me for my glasses. I thought I felt them, but before I could grasp them, a shoe stepped on my hand and I screamed.

But the reporters kept squeezing tighter around me, trying to get the scoop.

The crowd crushed against me, made it impossible to stand, and I began to panic. “Get back…please,” I shouted into the din.

As I struggled to stand, a reporter’s legs were pushed into my side. He lost his balance and fell, landing on top of me. I could barely breathe as I tried to wriggle from under his greater weight.

Then there was the sound of a powerful Alpha’s voice in my mind. “Everyone, freeze and back away from the girl!”

The crowd had no choice but to obey. They backed away from me and kneeled, unable to move until they were released from the Alpha’s command.

Betas could not defy an Alpha. Their bodies instantly obeyed a command from an Alpha, even against their will.

Then strong arms gently lifted me, and I was carried away from the crowd.

“Are you okay?” Someone cradled me against his hard chest. I looked up at the handsome face of the powerful Alpha who had saved me.

It was Victor.
