Chapter 14

Victor gently lowered me to my feet. Everything was blurry, but I could make out the shapes of the crowd. Except for a few students who had to be Alphas, everyone present was kneeling; their heads lowered while showing their n*ecks.

It was the submissive posture among werewolves.

This was the first time I heard the aggressive, dominant voice Victor used to save me. It was rarely heard in modern werewolf society.

Modern Alpha leaders promoted an equal society and didn’t want the lower classes to think Alphas still considered themselves their superiors.

I realized I was clinging to Victor’s arm and released it. Taking a step back, I saw he was looking at me instead of the Betas kneeling on the ground. He seemed to be staring at my face. Feeling self–conscious, I tried not to squint.

Victor released the Betas from his power and found my glasses. Both the frames and the lenses were crushed.)

“Oh, no!” I exclaimed. “I’m practically blind without them.”

Victor tossed them in a trash can and guided me to the Ferrari.

I was glad to get in the car. It felt safe there, sitting next to Victor. I relaxed and let the stress of the day drain from me.

“Thank you,” I said, studying Victor’s blurry profile as he drove. “But why were you there?”

“I thought I’d take you to a new restaurant called Gilded,” Victor explained. “I invited William to join us. It will be an opportunity for him to get to know you.”

“Oh,” I tried to sound calm and casual, but knowing I was going to sit at the same table as William sent my heart rate into overdrive.

“I’m glad I was at the school just now,” Victor said. “Those reporters could have hurt you. They were way out of line. I’ll see that they are warned not to do it again.”

“Yeah… That was crazy,” I said.”Now I need to go to an optometrist. I really can’t see much without my glasses.”

Victor nodded and dialed his assistant’s number on his cell. “Findlay, I need you to contact Miss Wilson’s optometrist.” Victor looked at me. “His name is….

“Dr. Martin,” I said.  Sᴇaʀ*ᴄh the FɪndNovᴇl.nᴇt website on Gøøglᴇ to access chapters of novels early and in the highest quality.

“Dr. Martin,” Victor repeated. “Have a pair of eyeglasses made for her immediately. Hers were broken, and she can’t see without them. Yes, we will be at Gilded for dinner.”

Victor hung up. “Findlay will deliver your new glasses as soon as they are finished.”

“Thank you,” I said, impressed with how Victor handled

every problem..

“It’s too early to eat,” Victor said. “You don’t mind if I take the long way to the restaurant?”

I shook my head and laughed. “Not at all,” I said. “It’s fun to zoom around in this car.”

“Then let’s zoom around,” Victor said with a laugh and stepped on the accelerator.

After an enjoyable ride, Victor stopped before the restaurant and tossed the keys to a valet.

The hostess seated us and told Victor that William hadn’t yet arrived. But she took our drink order while we waited for him.

Findlay arrived at our table before my iced tea. He had a plastic case in his hand. “Dr. Martin made this pair himself. He will have two more pairs made for Miss Wilson by the weekend.”

“Thank you, Findlay,” Victor said.

Yes, thank you, Findlay,” I repeated and tried on the new glasses. I could see through them perfectly, but the frames were like no glasses I had ever worn. They didn’t seem right for me.

Instead of the cheaper thick, black plastic frames, my new glasses were larger and made of clear plastic with golden accents. They were beautiful. But I wasn’t pretty enough to

wear them.

I took them off and sighed.

“Is there something wrong with your new glasses?” Victor inquired. “If they aren’t the correct prescription, I’ll call Findlay to have the optometrist make you another pair.”

“No, I can see with them just fine,” I assured him before he called Findlay again. “But they’re not… they’re not what I always wear.”

“Your old glasses were hideous,” Victor said bluntly.

“So is my face,” I said dryly.

Victor laughed. “Your face isn’t hideous, but you could look much prettier if you tried. A good start would be to wear the new glasses.”

Chapter 14

I stared at the pretty eyeglasses in my hand. “I don’t know…”

“This new pair looks much better on you.” Victor insisted. “They don’t hide your beautiful green eyes as the old pair did.”

“I’ll feel silly wearing such beautiful glasses,” I objected.

Victor reached across the table and took my hand. “Daisy, listen to me. Those ugly glasses are part of why William paid no attention to you. Put the new glasses on.”

Hesitantly, I raised the glasses to my face. Victor smiled at me from across the table and squeezed my other hand, giving me the courage to sl*p the glasses into place.

“Much better,” he said. “You have exceptionally lovely eyes, Daisy. Don’t hide them. You would look even better with contact lenses.”

I looked around the room while wearing my new glasses. The restaurant was fancier than Mr. Gray’s, with sumptuous upholstery, velvet wallpaper, and gold trim. It reminded me of a restaurant from a movie.

“Maybe we should have gone somewhere else,” I murmured. I felt out of place here.

“Here comes William,” Victor said and let go of my hand. “Try to relax. Pay attention to him, smile, and laugh at anything he says that could be considered funny.”

I nodded and took a deep breath. My heart was pounding again, and my palms were sweaty.

William approached our table and sat down next to Victor. “Sorry, I’m late. I had to clean up after practice.”

“You’re right on time,” Victor told him. “Isn’t he, Daisy.”

I nodded.

Victor signaled for the waiter. “The rest of our party has arrived.”

The waiter took William’s drink order and gave us menus.

I studied my menu to keep from staring at William. But my heart sank when I saw most of the menu items were in another language.

What the heck is Croque Monsieur and Tomates Farcies? How was I supposed to order when I didn’t know what anything was or how to pronounce it?

Victor and William seemed used to it as they studied their menus. I felt like a complete bumpkin.

Victor gave me an encouraging smile. I discreetly pointed at the menu and shrugged. Victor seemed to understand and gave me a slight nod.

When the waiter returned, Victor said, “Daisy, you’ve never been here before and don’t know what’s good. Would you like me to order for you?”

“Puh… please,” I said, silently cursing the stutter that had reappeared with William’s arrival.

But William wasn’t paying any attention to me–again.

After the waiter took our orders and left for the kitchen, Victor attempted to draw. William into a conversation with both of us. But it took an uncomfortable turn.

“Are you two engaged as planned?” William asked.

I gasped. There were butterflies the size of seagulls flapping around in my stomach.

“That’s up

to Daisy,” Victor replied. He took my hand again and gave me a heated gaze that made me blush. His actions almost had me believing he wanted me. But Victor was a good actor.

William looked at me for a long time as if he was trying to see why Victor wanted me. It made me squirm in my seat.

“Why?” William asked. “Has she received a better offer?”

I blushed again when Victor replied, “Maybe.”

The rest of the dinner went by quickly. I tried not to speak because of my stutter and used my best table manners.

As we were finishing dessert, Victor received a phone call. He spoke into his cell for a minute and turned to William. “I’m needed elsewhere immediately. Would you please take Daisy home?”

William shrugged. “Sure. She’s living with Alex, right?”

“Yes,” Victor replied. “Make sure she gets there safely.”

“Of course,” William said, “Daisy, are you ready to go?”

I smiled and nodded. Maybe Victor could get William to want me. The seagulls in my stomach were multiplying, “Any… Any time you are,” I replied.
