Chapter 15

Victor’s POV

Wanting to relax before going home, I ordered another drink and asked the waiter to clear the table.

Seeing William and Daisy walking together from behind was slightly uncomfortable for me. But what I felt toward the girl who had been chosen to be my future wife could be ignored.

I handled everything reasonably well today. If things happen as expected, I should receive Daisy’s reply to my proposal today or tomorrow.

A lot will depend on Daisy and how effectively she used the opportunity I gave her. She needed to make a good impression on William during the car ride. But I wondered if she was capable of intriguing William with conversation.

Her stutter was unfortunate and must be overcome. It happens whenever she is nervous or feels overwhelmed, but there are ways to improve a speech impediment. I made at mental note to have Findlay look into it.

Yet, there was something special about the girl. Daisy seemed quite good at worming her way into a man’s mind. Her innocence made her quite appealing

But looks are important too in our world. If Daisy decided to cooperate with my plans, there were many suggestions I could make to improve her appearance.

I knew a lot about beautiful women. With a little effort, Daisy could quickly join their ranks. As her self–esteem grew, she would bloom into an unstoppable woman.

I will enjoy watching the transition.

The waiter brought my drink. I took a sip and savored the taste while I let my mind rehash my every encounter with Daisy.

Despite the stutter, I have confidence in her. Daisy was stronger than she realizes, and she’s a fighter. When she became angry with me, her stutter surprisingly stopped, and her speech became clear and firm, especially during our argument.

She was interesting.

It was a completely different side of her that made me curious to discover what else was hidden behind her shell of a shy introvert. I couldn’t help smiling while thinking about

  1. it.

Another surprise this afternoon about Daisy —- She was the girl I found on the road a

few years ago.

It was indeed a big surprise for me.

I finished my drink while remembering my first glimpse of Daisy. She was lying on the side of the road, pale and still. My wolf persona Adam was restless after seeing her vulnerable on the ground. I pulled my car over immediately, hoping she was still alive.

I got her to the hospital as quickly as possible. After being assured she was okay, I left the poor girl some candy and left the hospital. Her vulnerability made me want to hold her in my arms, but she was clearly far too young and innocent for a man like me.

I didn’t understand why I reacted so strongly to her. I wondered if it was… the mate bond? But that girl was too young to shift, and today, werewolves only marry other werewolves of the same ranking. They rarely find their fated mate now.

I asked my inner–wolf Adam if he knew what had happened. Adam also seemed clueless. about his strong attraction to this vulnerable girl.

I forced myself to put the matter behind me. Judging from the girl’s outfit, she clearly wasn’t born into an Alpha family, so I shouldn’t have anything to do with her anyway.

But I often wondered what happened to the girl and who she was.

Daisy made my inner–wolf Adam feel the same anxiety today. I couldn’t help but use my Alpha voice in public.

Seeing Daisy without glasses also immediately reminded me of the face of that vulnerable girl.

Even now, knowing the girl was Daisy, the memory touched me more than I care to admit. However, those feelings were dangerous for my plans, which is why she needed to accept my proposal of a fake engagement.

It meant I would secure the succession as the leader of the United Association of Alphas, yet I could live as a playboy without being bonded to any woman for the rest of my life.

Perhaps I should have told Daisy I was the one who saved her as she lay unconscious on the road to get her to agree to the marriage. It would have convinced that naïve girl that I was her knight in shining armor, her hero.

But using the incident on the road wouldn’t be fair to Daisy. She would never accept an open, business–oriented marriage, and I didn’t want to hurt her.

A fake engagement and an agreement that we would continue to live as we wished -would be better for both of us

“True love,” I repeated Daisy’s words with a smile and a hint of sarcasm. Stories of true love sold books and movies, but there was no such thing. Only the young and the naive believed true love existed.

My parents are a werewolf couple who are bound by mutual interests. They care about one another’s welfare, but they are more like business partners than lovers.

elfare, but they

They have maintained an open relationship for years now. Their only quarrels are over business matters. There is nothing wrong with this kind of marriage. It has been more successful than so–called love matches.

I learned an important lesson from watching my parents over the years. Love is a made–up thing that only exists in fairy tales, and only wealth and power can bring true happiness.

It’s what I’ve been taught. But Daisy was so sure about her “true love” as if it was the best thing in the world.

Does the entire world believe in true love except my family?

“If so, they’re wrong. Love is a made–up thing, a gimmick, meant to sell Valentines and chocolate,” I told myself and tossed money on the table to pay the bill. Then I stood and left the restaurant.

I drove around for a while until I grew tired and returned to my apartment, a small luxurious two–bedroom place in the city.

yet

I see my mother and father often, but I prefer to live alone. Bringing home a beautiful woman after a date could be awkward while living with your parents. Living alone allows me the freedom to entertain overnight guests whenever I want.

Still, a bachelor’s lifestyle had its disadvantages. Sometimes I woke up alone in the middle of the night and couldn’t get back to sleep. That’s when the silent stillness of apartment could be lonely.

I never spoke of these feelings. Loneliness was another sign of weakness that made people do stupid things. I know what I want to accomplish in life, and I won’t let anything, including emotions, stop me.

As I parked in the garage beneath my apartment, I was pleased to see the maid had left a light on as I requested. It made coming home to an empty apartment easier.

I locked the garage and went up the stairs to my apartment. The combination of elegance and practicality of my home suited me well.

Leather furniture, neutral–toned drapes, and beige carpeting complemented the dark “wood wainscoting and trim. My favorite room was the second bedroom I had

I looked inside the room to ensure everything was in order before going to the living room to pour another drink.

I was feeling slightly anxious while hoping to hear from Daisy. I wanted the matter. settled and our fake engagement to begin.

It was the only way my plans could move forward.

As I put down the glass after my first sip, my cell phone rang. The caller ID told me it was Daisy calling.

I smiled and answered the call.
