Chapter 21

My heart was pounding, but I tried not to show how terrified I was. Bella is a bully, and showing fear would only make her bolder. If I remained calm, maybe she would tire of trying to torment me and go away.

But Bella was on a mission.

“Look at you. You are such an unbelievable dork,” Bella said with another laugh. “Only you would wear a freaking wetsuit to a pool party. Does it hurt to be this stupid?”

“Pluh… please, jus… just lah.. leave me alone,” I stammered. “I… I didn’t do… do any … anything to you.” I tried to walk away, but she grabbed my arm and spun me around.

“You didn’t do anything to me!” Bella repeated. She positioned herself, nose to nose, in front of me.

Smelling a strong drink on her breath, I looked down at the ground. The hate in her eyes was terrifying.

“Because of you, you freak, I was transferred to an all–girls school,” Bella said hotly. “Do you know what it’s like? I have to wear a freaking uniform, and the teachers are so strict we get detention just for chewing gum in class. I hate it, and I hate you!”

Bullies like Bella always thought they were the victims whenever they were punished. for making someone’s life miserable. Didn’t she see or care about the damage she did to others?

I shook my head and backed away. “It was …wasn’t my fah …fault. My fah…father was mah…mad about you… you tearing my

you tearing my … my new

my new… new dress.” Why couldn’t I talk when I needed to the most?

“It is your fault.” Bella took a step forward and pushed me. I stumbled and almost fell on my butt.

I looked around to see if anyone noticed what was happening. People were dancing, talking, and laughing at the other end of the pool deck, but nob*dy seemed to notice I was being attacked.

I spotted William talking to a small group near the door to the conservatory. His back was turned toward me. He’d never hear me over the din of the

party,

The pool house was at the far end of the swimming pool, and the band was so loud I doubted anyone would hear me if I screamed.

“Freaks like you deserve to be bullied.” Bella continued berating me through grit teeth. “Your fa… fa… father shoulda put you in a special school with all the other freaks instead of making normal kids put up with you.”

Every word out of Bella’s mouth was like a slap across my face.

“There had to be a mistake with the DNA test,” she said.” There’s no way a loser like you can be an Alpha or from a wealthy family like the Wilsons.”

“Please, Buh…Bella.” Tears were welling up in my eyes.

“Just shut up!” Bella demanded. “I know you snitched on me and Priscilla. Principal- Jones told my parents you gave him our names.

My teeth were chattering as I shook my head wildly. Bella was furious. And I had never been in a physical fight in my life. Her anger was making me feel sick.

Another scan of the party told me nob*dy would help me, so I had to try to stand up to her. But I wasn’t sure I had the nerve.

Maybe I should threaten her with my father. Everyone else seemed to be in awe of him. I didn’t want to get anyone in trouble, but I needed Bella to leave me alone.

I stood up straight and looked her in the eye. “Buh…Bella, you start started the whole thing by… by tearing my dress. Now la…leave me alone, or I’ll t…tell my father to …to talk to your…your parents.”

“Don’t you dare say a word about me.” Bella said and shoved me backward. My glasses. flew from my face and landed on the ground. “Just keep your big mouth shut.”

I bent to retrieve my glasses, but Bella grabbed my hand.

“Come on, Daisy,” Bella said and grabbed my arm. “Don’t hide back there.” She pulled me toward the dance floor. “Let’s show everyone the cool dance moves you can do in your dorky wetsuit.”

I tried to pull away from her, but Bella’s grip was strong.

“Puh…please, Bella. Duh…don’t,” I begged. I fought to keep her from pulling me onto the dance floor.

“Oh, whatever. Go hide in the bushes, geek.” Bella said and gave me a shove.

I stumbled and tried to stay on my feet, but I lost my balance and braced myself for a hard landing on the cement and stone pool deck. But instead, I landed in the pool.

Chapter 21

My relief at the soft landing turned to panic as the cool water closed over my head.

I was in the pool’s deep end, and I couldn’t swim!

Π

My eyes automatically closed against the chlorinated water, and I held my breath while. trying to determine which direction was up.

My arms thrashed about as they searched for the surface of the water, the side of the pool, or anything else that could help me escape from the water.

My lungs began to burn with the need for air as I felt my b*dy sink further into the water. This couldn’t be happening.

After a few more seconds, my buttocks hit the bottom of the pool, and my eyes flew open.

I looked upward through twelve feet of clear water and saw the surface. The deep blue sky and a few fluffy clouds in the sky overhead tormented me.

Above me, there was air. That’s where I would be able to breathe. But it seemed further away than twelve feet. It was like I was at the bottom of an abyss.

My lungs were screaming for oxygen. All I could think of was how I could get to the surface. How could I get my head above the water?

I didn’t want to die yet. My life couldn’t be over at seventeen. My eighteenth birthday was coming soon. I wanted to experience my first shift.

There were so many things I hadn’t had the chance to do. I just met my biological father, and I finally had a chance to be with William.

I had to save myself. There had to be a way to reach the surface.

got my feet underneath me and pushed off against the bottom of the pool. The weight of the water made me feel like I was much heavier. But triumph rushed through me as I shot upwards and broke the surface.

My head cleared the water long enough for me to take one precious gulp of air before I started to sink again.

I wondered why someone didn’t notice I was drowning. Where was Bella? Did she hate me enough to let me die?

Flapping my arms slowed my descent, but I couldn’t get my head clear of the water again. So I let myself sink again to try leaping to the surface again.

Chapter 21

When my feet found the pool bottom. I pushed against it as hard as possible. But my efforts didn’t get me clear of the surface this time, and I sank faster than on my previous attempt.

My lungs were demanding I breathe. My heart was pounding, I was growing dizzy, and my vision was fading. And I was afraid, so afraid.

As air bubbles began streaming from my nose, I wondered if I would meet my birth mother in the afterlife. The bubbles were my last breath escaping from my lungs. When my lungs were empty. I would involuntarily inhale.

Suddenly someone was behind me in the water. A strong, masculine arm wrapped. around my waist, and I was being lifted to the surface.

Was it William?
