The weight of the water became lighter as the surface came closer. Hands grabbed my arms as my head broke the surface.

It was William. He was kneeling on deck helping pull me from the water.

Then who was my rescuer?

As William helped lift me to the pool deck and placed me on my side, Victor climbed from the water.

Pool water rushed from my mouth as I coughed and sputtered.

“Daisy, are you okay?” Victor asked. “How did you fall in the water?”

I couldn’t speak as I continued to cough up water. Victor had saved me. He now sat on the pool deck in front of me while William was behind me.

“She didn’t fall,” Mrs. James said. “I was inside ensuring the kitchen staff had prepared enough food when I heard a commotion near the pool house. I looked out a window and saw the Burrows girl bullying Daisy. I saw her push her into the pool.”

“Are you sure Bella pushed her?” William asked his mother. He looked around the pool. house for Bella, but she was gone.

“Yes,” Mrs. James insisted. “But I saw Daisy come to the water’s surface, so I continued supervising the staff. However, when I looked outside a minute later, Daisy was under the water again. I ran outside to find you to check if Daisy was okay.”

Are you okay, Daisy?” Victor asked. He brushed my mop of wet hair away from my

face.

I sat up with Victor and William’s help and nodded. I was grateful to be alive, but the ordeal in the pool was too much to process.

“Did Bella push you into the pool?” Victor asked. The concern on his face seemed genuine. But it would be a significant inconvenience for him if I died before he was officially declared the next leader of the alliance.

I nodded again and hoped Bella wouldn’t be angrier with me. I was snitching again.

To be fair, I wasn’t sure if Bella pushed me into the pool on purpose or if she intended for me to drown. She was trying to humiliate me, but she had no way of knowing I couldn’t swim.

Still, Bella was dangerous. Her bullying almost killed me, and how she convinced herself she was the victim was seriously messed up.

“I’m fine,” I said and broke into another coughing fit. William’s concern was touching. He was starting to care for me.

“I’ll be right back,” William said.

“Daisy, I should take you to the hospital,” Victor said. “You were blue when we pulled you from the water. I’m sorry. I should have been watching you more closely.”

“Where were you?” I croaked. I didn’t blame Victor for what happened, but he had promised to stay close. He was probably chasing another girl.

“I was in the conservatory, um, talking to an old friend,” he said.

I rolled my eyes and shook my head. Flirting with an old lover was more like it. He was such a player. But since we weren’t really engaged, I reminded myself that it wasn’t any of my business.

Victor gave me a grin. “You appear to be recovering nicely, and I’m glad. I never want to see you in danger like that again. And I’ll see to it that you aren’t.”

Victor walked a few steps toward the pool house and retrieved my glasses from near the hibiscus where they had fallen. I was relieved to see they were in one piece.

William approached us with Bella in tow. He literally had to force her to come with him.

“Let me go, William,” she screeched. “You can’t take that freak’s side over mine. What is wrong with you?”

William stopped at Victor’s side and pulled Bella in front of him.

“Victor, this is Bella Burrows,” William said before turning to his mother. “Mom, is this the person you saw push Daisy into the pool?”

“Yes,” Mrs. James replied. “She pushed poor Daisy into the water, and then she walked away and did nothing to help her.”

Bella grimaced and gave me a murderous stare. “I didn’t know the dork can’t swim. She’s not normal. Just look at her.”

Victor stood and got in her face. “Never come near Daisy again, or I will ruin you and your family. And if you ever attempt to harm her again in any way, I will make sure you are locked up for the rest of your life.”

Bella stood silently, but her eyes were mutinous.

“Do you understand me?” Victor barked. “You know who I am and that I’m capable of doing what I said.”

“Yes,” Bella snapped. “But….”

“And you are no longer welcome in my home,” William added. He looked at his mother, and she nodded. “Please leave. I abjure you, Bella,” William told the furious girl. “If you don’t leave on your own, I will have the servants remove you.”

“I’ll remove her,” Victor offered.

“No, William and I will see to it that she leaves,” Mrs. James said. “You must take Daisy to a doctor to ensure she’s alright. Her face is still rather gray.”

Victor nodded to Mrs. James and William before scooping me into his arms. “Thank you for your hospitality and your cooperation in this matter.”

As Victor carefully carried me across the pool deck to the conservatory, I heard Bella screaming.

“It wasn’t my fault,” she insisted. “Daisy started the whole thing. And I didn’t know she couldn’t swim. This isn’t fair!”

“I saw you from the kitchen window,” Mrs. James told Bella. “You’re lying.”

“William,” Bella pleaded. “You know me. Don’t do this.”

“Yes, Bella, I do know you,” William agreed. “That is why exactly I ask you to leave now.”

“Over Daisy,” I heard Bella shriek as Victor carried me into the conservatory. “You’re banishing me over that freak.”

“I don’t want to go to the hospital,” I told Victor as he placed me in the passenger seat of

his car.

“It would be a good idea, Daisy,” he said. “You almost drowned.”

“Okay, but I want to go home afterward,” I said and started to cry.

Victor pulled me close and I sobbed in his arms for a few minutes.

“I really am sorry,” he said. I saw you with William and chatting with other people, and I thought you were okay. But there is no excuse for my neglect. Forgive me.”

I pulled away, sat up, and wiped my eyes with a tissue from Victor’s glovebox. I hated. falling apart like this in front of him. But my near drowning was a horrible experience: that I’d never forget.

“It’s over now, and I’m fine,” I insisted. “Take me to a doctor if it makes you feel better. Then I want to go home.”
