Chapter Seventeen- Lance

I didn’t really mean it to come out that way. Okay, maybe I did. But not really. After all, Eva wasn’t what if it- fine, she- what if she was another Hal 9000 in disguise or something. She had been acting strange… what if Eva wasn’t Eva anymore? Kira too. My anger wasn’t completely pointed at her, but she believed in Eva’s humanity, she wasn’t even human herself… and things had escalating. The regret came crashing down on me now, all at once. I wanted to go back, to apologize… but my friends did not forgive without consideration. And, there was a huge battle going on. Eva had freed me, but that feral snarl on her face as she fired at his captors with her limb had not been human. So, I had taken the car (of course I couldn’t go on foot, what was I, an idiot?) and driven to the airplane. I had looked up basics on how to drive a plane… I knew it wouldn’t be enough, but it had to be. A couple of hours later, I pulled up to the air hanger. Especially with the empty roads, driving was surprisingly easy to get the hang of.

There was a supply shed, where I retrieved a ladder and use it to scale the airplane and enter. The door was shut closed, so I had to get down and get a crowbar. It popped open- hadn’t been locked, only frozen shut. Climbing inside, I shut the door and sat down in the pilot’s chair. Looking back at the phone screen, I pressed the button for ignition, turned the keys, and did anything else essential to flying an airplane. I heard the turbines spin to life, and I quickly piloted the plane out of the air hangar… Just like driving! I thought. However, things went downhill from there. One simply cannot learn to fly a plane in one day. A couple of minutes after I was airborne, the plane started careening from one side to the other. As I frantically pushed the buttons on the plane, willing it to fly, the nose dipped down. In the span of a few minutes, I had gone from steady flying to diving towards the ground. Scrolling through the manual on my phone as fast as I could, I found what I was looking for- the seat ejector. I dropped out of the airplane, and forlornly watched as it spiraled to its doom. By some miracle, I seemed to be landing not that far away from a city, which was good. I could walk there. A.V.A had provided everyone with false credit cards, so I could easily rest and recuperate until I could find a way to get back. I was stuck in the middle of nowhere…
