Chapter 43 

“Yes. I was told you were arrested for solicitation.” 

“I swear I wasn’t doing anything, Ana, Shit!” 

Ana laughed. “I know you didn’t do anything. Damien. I already spoke to the woman and she said you adamantly refused her services.” 

“When why was I locked up for so long?” 

Ana’s lip twitched. “Someone powerful said you were to be held back.” She shrugged. 

Damien huffed. “Nathan. He was fucking with me for what I said.” He leaned back against the passenger seat and closed his eye. It had been a long night. “Where did you think I went?” Damien asked quietly. 

“It doesn’t matter what I thought.” 

“It matters,” Damien insisted. Ana didn’t say anything. “Tell me.” 

“Finding you in jail was much better than what I had thought.” 

Damien would have to work hard to make her trust him. Without thinking, he lifted her knuckles to his mouth and kissed them lightly. “I’ll make you trust me. I promise.” 

The ride home wasn’t what she expected. Damien wasn’t defensive for a change. He was more worried that she wouldn’t believe him. 

“Ana?” Damien called out just as she was about to head to her house. 

She turned and was instantly enveloped in a tight hug. It was like he was trying to wrap her entire body in his. He was warm and after a moment of shock, Ana relaxed into the hug. She put her arms around his waist and rested her hands on his back. 

They didn’t speak. They didn’t need to. They just sat there for a few minutes. Her car was pressed against his chest and she could hear his heart beating and feel it against her cheek. Damien released her and she instantly felt cold. 

“My first hug from Damien Wright,” she joked. 

“No, it wasn’t,” Damien retorted. 

“That definitely was the first,” she insisted. 

“I distinctly remember hugging you when we won the Babel project.” 

Ana thought back and a distant memory suddenly hit her. “Oh, please,” she gasped. “You almost smothered me and I fell to the ground.” 

He shrugged and smirked. “You should be happy your boss was enthusiastic. In my opinion, it was a bigger gift.” 

“Damien, that was not a hug.” 

“It was meant to be,” Damien said. 

“You’re so full of crap.” 

“If you don’t believe me, that is on you. But I am telling you, it was meant to be a hug. I just didn’t know how to do it at the last minute. It felt more like a bodyslam.” 

Ana shook her head and laughed. “Sure. Anyway, I have to go to bed. Alan is going to wake up any minute now and I am going to be cranky because I didn’t get any sleep.” 

“I could just stay up and look after him while you are sleeping.” Damien offered. 

Ana considered it for a minute before she shook her head. “I appreciate that Damien, but you look like you got less sleep. than I did.” 

He nodded dejectedly. “Are you ever going to trust me with him?” 

“It’s not that I don’t trust you,” she sighed. “I am just used to taking the load on my own. It’s not easy to ask for help… or accept it.” 

“But you trust Marcus,” he hissed the name and Ana could see the tension on Damien’s face. 

She didn’t want him to feel second to Marcus when it came to Alan. Ever. Ana was the one who had kept him from his son. She was the reason he didn’t know what to do. 

“You’re right, Damien. You deserve a chance to spend time with Alan. Can we talk about it later, though?” she begged. “Neither of us is awake enough for this conversation.” 

“Sure,” Damien said with more energy. 

“Would you like to come over for dinner tonight?” Ana watched as his eyes lit up. “I have no doubt you would,” she answered 

herself.

“That early?” Damien asked. 

“Yes. Damien.” She giggled. “We have a three–year–old. He goes to bed at nine at the latest. You can look after him while I am cooking. We will eat around six–thirty. The earlier you come the better.” 

Damien nodded. “Do you want help with something?” 

“No. Just be there on time.” She turned, leaving Damien standing on the street. “Your mom asked me to stay in the guest bedroom for tonight,” she chimed. Damien watched her until she disappeared into the house. Ana tiptoed to not wake anyone. She found Alan curled up in bed with his grandma and smiled. 

She saw Damien slide into his own childhood room before she curled up in her guest bedroom and went to sleep. 

Ana was able to sleep for a few more hours. Alan woke up but Dianna kept him entertained and made him breakfast. Ana woke up and packed up Alan in the car and drove to her house. 

“Grandpa!” Alan squealed as he jumped into her dad’s arms. 

“Hello,” her father turned around, carrying Alan inside. 

Ana cleared her throat foudly. “You’re forgetting your daughter. You can’t get away with it because you have a toddler in your 

arms.” 

“You look tired,” her dad asked as they entered the house. Alan was already in the playroom. 

“My son’s father was in jail for no reason until this morning. So, I should be tired.” 

Alan snorted. “You didn’t have to bail him out. You could have let him suffer a little longer.” 

“Sorry, that’s not happening. I can’t let an innocent man stay in jail.” She paused. “You had too much fun knowing Damien was in jail. Do you feel better now?” 

Alan Sr smiled. “Of course. Have you forgiven him completely?” 

I am saying nothing of the sort. Damien has been working hard and he deserves to be treated well.” 

Alan Sr was silent for a moment. “I think he cares about you, Ana.” 

“He cares about Alan.” 

“Yes, he does. But I am pretty sure he cares about you too.”
