Lacuna:

chapter 9

The light of dawn seeped into the room. She rubbed her blurry eyes and walked to the window, there was a pearly glow in the sky. Galinarael loved sunrises, it was what reminded her of her mother. Every morning they would sit in the middle of the clearing, with a picnic basket and watch the rising sun cast a rosy hue across the morning sky before having breakfast. They also reminded her that with it comes new opportunities.

Her thoughts were interrupted by the sound of the door being opened. She looked away from the window towards the door and there stood Larkin, a tray of food in his hands and a rose between his teeth. He set the tray down on the bedside table before walking up to her. He pulled her closer to him, wrapped his arms around her waist and softly kissed her forehead. "I remember you telling me your favorite flowers are white roses, so on my way back I brought this for you."

He took the rose from between his teeth and took both her hands in his. He placed it in her hands and stepped away from her. "I also brought you some breakfast. I'll leave you to eat now.' he turned around to leave but Galinarael pulled him back, pulled him down on the bed beside her and put the tray between them. She quietly began to eat, admiring the white petals of the rose between her thumb and forefinger.

She loved every flower, but her favorite was roses. Her mother used to have a garden full of them in the backyard, all in different colors. On every special occasion held at the house, she'd pick them and put them in different colorful pots she bought from an antique store and no matter how old they were, they never failed to make the event elegant or classy.

The ones in the front yard were Chrysanthemums and daisies, they were her favorites too. She'd only pick them during spring and decorate the house with them. Different scents would fill the house, making it bright and alive–like how spring was supposed to be.

And last on that long list were Tulips, her sister and dad's favorite. During winter, they'd be placed on every corner of the house–especially in the foyer where everyone could see them. Both her parents had an undying love for nature, this is why they bought the land and built a family there, it was like another part of their lives of which they then introduced to their daughters. Since Galinarael is now the official owner of the house, she's hoping to bring that light back into the house. Everything would go back to what it was.

The blue sky was dotted with fluffy white clouds that drifted lazily in the gentle breeze. Larky and his beloved sat under the oak tree once more, enjoying each other's company. A picnic basket in between and bad jokes here and there. They were carefree, like the old Gali and Larky–just the two of them.

"Tell me about the ride again." She said between laughs, enjoying hearing the stories about the two of them. "Well, I don't exactly know how you saw that I was very well hidden–or so I thought–but you found me and wrapped your tiny hands around mine, stopping me before I could leave. When I first looked into your eyes I was intrigued, they were so beautiful I couldn't look away. You interrupted the little moment by asking if I wanted a turn on the swing, but I didn't take the offer. I did promise to return though. "

"Did you?" She asked in a wobbly voice, sandwich now set down and blurry eyes focused on Larkin. "I did, I came back over and over and over again–even after I told you I would leave and might never come back again, I still came back and stayed for as long as you had asked me to. "He cupped her cheek in his hefty hand and brought her closer, gave her a soft kiss on the forehead and looked away from her. He looked for anything he could distract himself with. "It's okay Larky, it's all alright. I'm here now and even though I'm not the same, I'm here and it's never gonna change." She nuzzled her nose in the crook of her neck and gingerly wrapped her arms around him.

He knows she is right and hopefully it stays like that forever, he can't afford to lose her again, Never.

The evening sun cast long shadows on the ground. The slanting rays of the setting sun gave a warm orange tinge to the sky. Under the oak tree they remained, heart to heart.
